Ok, so we moved to Leaf City. We spent all weekend and this evening clearing the bloody things. We resorted to two methods: incineration and wheelbarrowing them to the forest across the road. Both are tiresome, the incinerator more fun but slower by volume. Tonight I burned a finger trusting garden gloves to insulate well enough to take the lid off. They didn't.
We seem to have a lot of very big trees overhanging our land. Next year we need plan B.

Plan B - Get someone else to do it.
We have a small wood (1/2 acre) right next to the house and leaves are a part of everyday life. I have tried a garden vac, shredding them before dumping them at the bottom of the garden, but as you say it's tiresome. Now I just wait for it to get bad before I do anything!
Leaf blowers just scatter them elsewhere, for them to be blown back again. The best method I have found is using my ride on mower to collect them, then dump them at the bottom of the garden when the bag is full.

Ok,hope I can help here. I can send you a pair of very high quality work gloves that might stop you getting burnt. Let me know if you'd like them. How about cutting back the parts of the trees that overhang your land? I can also help with that but you're a bit far away.
Maybe find a pikey to do it. Then they'll leave all the bits at the bottom of your land then you'll get your shed broken into.
Sorry,couldn't help it.

Trees are beautiful things. Clearing leaves is an appreciation of this. Clear leaves little and often is best I find.

Thanks, Chris, I ended up using oven gloves like I should have done to start with. There is no chance of cutting back the trees because a) they are huge, b) they are beautiful, c) there are many of them.

The best method I have found is using my ride on mower to collect them, then dump them at the bottom of the garden when the bag is full. Nearly all our clearing was from the drive and patio areas, which are considerable in size. The rest was from areas that we couldn't mow anyway.

ChrisB must be able to offer advice and wisdom - surely he has all those forests to clear and maintain. Reckon you need one of those trusty park keeper's pointy sticks Martin...

Ah, good to know as we need to buy a ride-on mower at some point. You just need to make sure that the anti-scalping wheels are suitably adjusted, and collect the leaves when dry.

Ha! I don't believe I have ever had occasion to make anyone move leaves in order to tidy up a woodland. In nature, tidiness is the enemy!

Reuse Last year I did a lot of shifting. Was good exercise but went on a long time. We have a guy blow them and pile up ready for spreading on the flower beds next year. They shrink down a huge amount and with our soil being so poor it is good for the garden.

Why don't you move into a flat.

I never understood why someone invented the leaf blower - surely you need something to suck them up, not blow them all over the place ?
Having said that I have 2 suggestions (I believe one already made)
1. get a big ride on mower which will suck them up in no time and shred them at the same time.
AND/OR
2. build a compost heap - if you don't want to indulge I bet there are some keen gardeners around who would love to take the composted leaves off your hands.

I have looked for a better way to handle leaves. There isn't one Blowing into a pile then carrying to another place seems least worst. If you have a huge pile already no need to blow. Lawn mowing them can be done and offers the advantage of shredding them for quicker breakdown. Problem is the bag or bin fills up in no time A vacuum with a collector the size of a big shed would be good. Manoeuvring it around could be awkward

Hehe, We just did our front drive. Gravel, edged border hedges, thick pile of leaves outside at the little gate for walking to the village. I blew the drive leaves in to a couple of piles with the leaf blower and then sucked them up. Make nice compost. The piles by the gate I raked away and round to the out / other side of our boundary wall. Tadaa Those on the grass will disappear when I mulch cut the grass. Plan to do that tomorrow. There will be a few more of course yet. I also cleared the gutters. Not much to clear. Only have gutters on the garage and they are low enough for a step ladder. House is thatched so no gutters

A 350 litre bag may fill up quickly, but it empties quicker.

But Martin, raking leaves is great exercise. Think how fit you'll be when the time comes to shovel all that snow.
