Managed to move house just before it became impossible. Very lucky really. The listening room has increased size from 17 by 11 to 35 by 14 i.e. from this:

Do the Apogees need plenty of space behind them? What power amp(s) can drive those things adequately?

Noooooo - long wall rules !!! I think Justin should try that - with the Aps against the big glass window - might work, might not, worth a go especially when there's time to spare.

Looks useful for organising and moving around. I have the kit and speakers on tne long wall with 2 spaces either side that don't work that well

1st impressions? Very different to the sound in your old room? It reminds me of a pub called the Cat & Wheel in Bristol. Really. It sounds much more like a small pub venue does for a wanna be band. One good thing about planars is the sound level doesn't drop off with distance so much. So perhaps surprisingly, though the Apogees look far less imposing in here, they sound far more immense. Even in the lobby to the studio, and this is a separate building to the main house with shower, kitchenette etc some 40 foot away good volume levels are not an issue. The soundstage is simply vast. However more soft furnishings and a short throw 120 inch laser projector for those music Blu Rays will help it get better. It is a tad echoey in there at the moment.

I prefer throwing across the room rather than down the length. It depends on the dimensions, of course.

Do the Apogees need plenty of space behind them? What power amp(s) can drive those things adequately? I had them at 36 inches in the last room and the same here. Then I moved them forward to nearly 4 foot. In here that didn't make much difference. I am running them with a 60 Watt Luxman. Only it isn't. Into four Ohms it is 120 Watts pure class A. And about 300 max in A/B. That's enough. It's the quality that counts though. Finding amps good enough has been a real challenge.

No offense but it might. I'd certainly try it if only because personally I'm more cumfy facing a wide wall than a narrow one. I prefer the wider sonics as well, I've never had a room where that didn't work best for me. And you do have 2 long walls in case the expanse of glass is bad.

Well, that sounds like an excellent start! I had wondered if your Luxman would be able to fill that much larger space. Sounds like it isn't an issue. As you say, planars help with that, not much to the sides and a lot straight down the middle I find it hard to imagine them sounding far more immense, they sounded pretty damn immense in your previous place! Curses on the virus lockdown, I'd love to come along for a listen.

You are very welcome, but it is early days for that room yet. So waiting a while will only mean it is better when you do make it.
I am seriously looking forward to getting a big projector screen in there. They have become very good recently with ambient light rejecting screens. You can literally watch them in daylight without washout.
Anyway Alan has my Lampi at the moment and is doing some seriously good stuff on it, which in reality is long overdue.
I have built up quite a triode collection, and Alan is optimising it for the valves you see below:
Finalised heater selection table:
HEATER SELECTOR SWITCH
Position 1 1A heaters, less than 5V
Philips AD1 4V 0.95A
KR PX4 4V 1.1A
Marconi PX4 4V, 1A
Position 2 1.5A heaters, less than 5V
EML Globe Mesh 45 2.5V, 1.5A
EML AD1 4V, 1.5A
Cunningham CX-345 2.5V 1.5A
Position 3 2A heaters, less than 5V
Marconi Osram PX25 4V, 2A
Tesla AD1n 4V, 2A
Tesla RD27AS 4V 2-2.3A
Position 4 2.5A heaters, less than 5V
Psvane 2A3 2.5V, 2.5A
Electro Harmonix 2A3 2.5V, 2.5A
Position 5 1A heaters, 5V and over
Tung Sol 6A3 6.3V, 1A
Position 6 1.2A heaters, 5V and over
Sylvania VT-52 7V 1.2A
300B 5V 1.2/1.3A
A lot of flexibility there. But also the heater supply should be vastly improved with a Rod Coleman DHT regulator, custom built Toroidy transformer and a mil spec selection switch.
