Some treasures from the past just arrived. Pics don't do them justice they are gorgeous in the flesh. Even the wife commented. Quite large too. Quite a bit bigger than 300Bs for instance. Internally absolutely identical. How these have survived the best part of 100 odd years in this condition is beyond me.

50 quid for a couple of PX25s seems fair to me:D;) Will slap them on the tester later.

Good news Alan has finished the Lampi. Hopefully I'll have it this coming week. Quite a big upgrade really. I am expecting very good things. Here's some shots he sent me. First shows the custom spec Toroidy transformer in sexy chrome plate. Second the heater selection switch and heatsink. Third shows the Rod Coleman filament regulator and mil spec selection switch. Info on Rod Coleman here: www.bartola.co.uk/valves/dht-filament-regulator/

Well, that doesn't look like your average bit of hi-fi kit!

No it's a bit mad for a DAC. Now Alan has made it insane! Seriously looking forward to having a play with it.

I have been giving this a last test in the system yesterday, I can see why Justin likes it.
It hummed like a B@st@rd after previous modification but now there is none.

Yeah it was sent back to Lampizator to fix a hum problem, but they re-configured the DAC circuit and made the hum worse.
Not good. The circuit did sound better IMHO but the hum with some valves was a serious issue.
I think Alan's solution will be excellent. More when I get it back.

Justin, did you specify those changes to your DAC or did you say ‘make it sound better, by any means necessary’?

Justin, did you specify those changes to your DAC or did you say ‘make it sound better, by any means necessary’? I am not sure what you mean. For Lampizator changes they basically changed the circuit to something close to a GG2 and completely ignored what the unit went in for. For Alan's filament supply changes I suggested Tentalabs but he ended up going Rod Coleman on advice of someone else. Toroidy tranny is what Lampi use in their most expensive gear. The filament selection switch Alan found. This DAC now has a really good spec internally as good as or better than a GG2 at a guess. Filament supply is definitely more flexible. I added some real foo in earlier iterations. Choice of Dueland or Jupiter output stage caps, Audio Note silver tants, Audio Note UX4 sockets etc.

Bass in this new room is markedly different.
Playing Badman VIP loud and the sofa and my chest feels it. That never happened in the old room no matter what volume I played at.
Both rooms had/have solid floors.
Interesting.

New arrivals. Tesla RD27AS. Basically a CZ PX25 equivalent. Be interesting to see which sounds better. Osram/Marconi versus Tesla, basically.

I don't know they are devoid of the usual date code. These are a 75% pair. I have another pair coming at 100%. The date for those is known see the photo below i.e. the 30th June 1980.

Nervous times on the tube tester. RD27AS first. What we're looking for is 7ma/V for a new valve. Sold by cipsnaj eBay rating 995 sales at 100% feedback. He declared these to test at 75%. What did we get? 5.2 and 5.3 ma/V. Cipsnaj is an excellent seller. As bang on 75% as you could expect and it shows common agreement between testers. It also shows that the guy who restored this tester knew what he was doing. Some dodgy geezer called Alan Bottler I think it was... can't quite remember now:D:)

Now here's the PX25 test. This just freaked me out. The Osram came in with flying colours at 7.2. The Marconi came in at 3.3. WTF? Only two sections of the filament appeared to be lit. Tapped the valve. A blue spark emitted from the far left hanger. Tapped again. And again. More blue sparks. Then... hey presto it sprang to life. All four sections lit as you can see. Phew! Close call. Then perhaps unsurprisingly it measured 6.6 ma/V. I am pretty happy with that TBH and it is better as a pair than a number of triodes I have bought new. Really. 30 minutes in the tester and it is still fine. Let's hope it stays that way.
