A true music lover would embrace Spotify Can't remember the last time I didn't find what I was looking for - YouTube for music? nah, pants, total pants. I'm shocked you even think it's OK TBH. If you don't have Spotify, how do you know they don't have what you like . . . hey, hey, go on answer that one then? Hahaha. Free 30 day Premium trial at the moment too - you are denying yourself unnecessarily and I don't at all understand point 3, "What if Spotty implodes?" Well if it does you don't use it and no longer pay £9.99 a month, simples. It won't blow up anything in your home, honest. Money back guarantee if it does. But hey, don't drink the water if you don't want to, but I'd rather not be thirsty.

Baby steps. Not totally convinced on Spotty. 1. They still don't have a lot of albums I search for. 2. What happens if Spotty implodes ? 3. YouTube is good and often has the albums Spotty doesn't. 4. Going through the mental work required to virtually ignore a lot of LPs and CDs and *trust* an outside source 5. Change ! Let's take the points you raise in order. 1. How about giving some examples? The key to getting the best out of a search facility is to learn how best to use it. 2. You move onto something else - the most you're going to be out of pocket is £9.99 . 3. Youtube has some pretty horrendous data compression applied. The artists whose albums are listed do not get paid a penny if they didn't put them there. 4. Why ignore your local library? I certainly do not. Use Spotify for stuff that you don't have, and play the local stuff. If you're feeling lazy, or can't move because you've had an injury use Spotify. 5. This is the crux of the biscuit. Everything changes. Nothing stays the same forever. I'm surprised that you raise it as an issue. Change is inevitable. 1. Recently Chris Spedding - Hurt Butthole Surfers- Weird revolution Caravan - Back to front There are man.y others 2. PITA if they implode. YouTube will still be there. 3. Most interested in sampling. Qaulity not vital but some YouTube is top notch. YouTube also has things you cannot buy, live concerts etc. YouTube do pay. Forget the source, thought is was common knowledge 4. Could try my local library. Mush easier to sample online. 5. Change was my little joke

There's quite a lot of Chris Spedding on there. Same with the Butthole Surfers.
Many artists have no say whatsoever regarding which of their works can be found on a platform, as they do no not own their own publishing or material.

Recently Chris Spedding - Hurt Butthole Surfers- Weird revolution Caravan - Back to front There are many others Ah OK and fair enough then. If you only want it for older stuff and obscure music, it might not be for you. But you say sampling on YouTube? For me the greatest pleasure of Spotify is discovery and good quality music playback, which I have. I can lose myself for hours and find new things every time. If you just want to play the same old thing or not much new music, then it might not hit the spot for you. But I think it would and who knows what you might find beyond Butthole Surfing

I use YouTube, Allmusic, Amazon and Spotty to sample. Rarely listen to full albums on any.
For anyone starting from scratch or always mobile Spotty and YouTube are probably the way to go.
Thought about the free trial. Still trying to work out what I would do with Spotty. That is where I am right now

I have used the phrase "Not on spotty" quite a few times here There are many albums I could not find
Searching on that will pull them up. Also used Not found on spotty / Spotify
New to me music also found on Paul Jones blues show, Stuart Maconei's shows, TiVo picking up various artists, BBC4, Vintage TV and others

I have to admit I'm totally mystified by both your logic and reluctance, but hey ho, each to their own old fella

You Tube is better for obscure music its a brillant resource. SPotify is better for descovering new music Both can sound very good I am nearly at the point where its my primary source to listen However I still prefer file based in terms of sound but I am not sure it matters to me as it used too

Spotify has become more and more my go-to for discovering new music. At work, it is my music source. At home, more so by the week.

I have to say reading all these threads about folk using the Pi, file based audio, music servers, streaming and Spotify I don't feel out in the cold as much anymore. I used to get quite a beating sometimes when I was banging my drum, especially on AoS.
It's the future chaps, not so much to replace anything, but to enhance and work alongside other formats to enjoy the music even more. Its great value and can sound exceedingly good, sound for pound is pretty much unbeatable IMHO 😀

In the past the biggest issue with Spotify has been getting it to sound good with more complex music. In the past I never could get convincing bass and impact. For whatever reason the Pi works a bit better than my server with spotify, but still not up with files it no longer bothers me I can enjoy bands like Dream Theater on it

Thoughts on Spotty :
It does a good if limited job due to the music it doesn't have. Far too much missing to be my only source and I doubt it will ever get around to mopping up the outer fringes of all music.
Part of the answer ? Absolutely Everything you need ? No Better than it used to be and with more music so it should become a bigger percentage of what anyone needs.
There is also the hunter gatherer element much diminished that we have previously had to employ to find our music. Spotty has a lot of what you want sitting there.
