I have a usb dac built into my amp, I run a long usb cable to the lap top on my lap. I was wondering if the sound quality would be similar using a pi3 via wi fi utilising the lap top as a big remote control?
The software side of things really frightens me but this thread has really gave me hope.
I would be nice to get rid of the usb snake running across the floor.
I have spotify premium but would like to play all my lossless files that I have on i tunes.....
I have a new cheapo acer lap top and wondered if ripping everything from scratch with something like db power amp but be the way to go ans stick it all on a ssd hard drive?
Can anyone help clarify- Im happy with the sound I have just now but would love to lose the long cables without losing sound quality.

Tony I could have had the long cable. Decided it had to be wireless. That long USB may be hurting the sound quality If you take the install step by step very carefully and refer back here if you have problems you will be fine. I had a couple of oddities that were easily sorted by Martin. Others here are better at these things than you or I

A well setup Pi will give you freedom to control from anywhere and better sound quality.
I'm not sure about whether Volumio or one of the other builds can read iTunes lossless files. Can anyone answer?

A Pi with piCorePlayer running LMS/Squeezelite plays ALAC. It's the LMS element that handles it, and LMS 7.9.1 deals with it natively.

I remember PaulD commenting on the difference moving over to using dBPoweramp to rip CDs, as opposed to using iTunes, and Paul saying how much better sounding the dBPoweramp rips were. I make a mental note of such things, and eventually get around to testing them out myself. This afternoon I ripped a CD to ALAC (Apple Lossless) using iTunes, and dragged the files onto my NAS and began comparing the dBPoweramp rip to the iTunes rip, and yes there is a difference, and the better sounding rip is the dBPoweramp one.
It was hardly an exhaustive test, but it's enough time spent to concur with Paul's findings. The iTunes rip has slightly vague quality to it. Leading edges are slightly blurred, and lower registers less well articulated. It doesn't sound bad, but I do prefer the dBPoweramp rip.
The ALAC files are going to be gone from the server within the next couple of minutes, and iTunes will be removed forever from my laptop within the ten minutes following that.

I use dB Power amp ripper & Converter. So easy & sounds good. Same here - I've been using it for years. If anyone begrudges paying the one off license fee they could use EAC, because the results are identical, but the EAC is not as quick in use, and its interface isn't as user friendly as dBP.

Volumio working fine
Cannot make the Pi accept any other sound signal. EG. Sample Allmusic or Amazon
Been in Settings. Device Disconnected Won't let me connect - but Volumio is fine using that same device
Clues please
