Using my new to me laptop more and more. So much better than the iPad I was using.
Sampling an album on the inbuilt speaker just now was horrific plus, less important I would like to get YouTube on the TV. One reason for the laptop was also a start for file based music.
I sit with the laptop around 10 feet away from my Pre Amp and TV.
Best way to connect for good sound quality ?
Have a few ideas already. Would like to know what others do.
An alternative is to go to my office and use the desktop connected direct to the system there. Convenient if I'm already there only.

It's easiest to just continue with your practice outlined on the bottom line of your post.

How serious do you want to go with this Mike I would suggest a good USB based DAC is your first starting point But if you want a really serious sound you have to go a lot further

The easiest way to start with is a USB cable to DAC (one with a USB input).

I want more flexibility in this ground floor room with the best system The office is 2 floors up in the converted loft. In Summer it is way too hot anyway.

Laptop connecting somehow with the system and the TV. Wireless rather than cables running across the room, which would get a large thumbs down from the boss. Ultimate sound quality can come later

I am surprised that you can't get You Tube on your TV already Mike. Have you looked?

The easiest way to start with is a USB cable to DAC (one with a USB input). My desktop in the office has audio out via a jack socket, cable connects with RCA on the other end to the Amp. Midfi maybe, fine in an office when I'm working. A USB cable or any other across the floor not acceptable so something has to be wireless, perhaps the keyboard, with the laptop close to the Pre amp.

How good is your WiFi coverage, Mike?

I am surprised that you can't get You Tube on your TV already Mike. Have you looked? The TV has Scart, component, PC, HDMI inputs and digital out. Also access via an HD freeview box which can take USB Current YouTube access is via Amazon firestick with a poor interface. I like the idea, certainly at the moment of extending the laptop into the system

How good is your WiFi coverage, Mike? Good I think. This laptop is wireless and seems fast. Router is in the next room. Last Speedtest was 17Mb if that helps

Dont throw loads of money at this, something that Hi-Fi boys cannot help themselves with. Just bypass the internal sound card with a good DAC or streamer via one of your USB

Not to start with. May or may not get serious with money later on. File based is coming, perhaps to a computer on my lap

Chromecast audio for music might work well. Chromecast TV might work well for video stuff.

A second hand StanDAC - a 7520 or original Caiman will do the job just fine. You'll get one for seventy quid or so.

Raspberry Pi with wi-fi dongle and any USB DAC (many StanDACs have one). Controlled via the laptop over wi-fi. Gives you file-based, Spotify, YouTube audio and internet radio.
Perfect and meets André's requirement for dead cheap!
