Apologies, as I feel a few years ago I would have known the answer.
I have a Rpi3 with an ALLO Boss. I use it mainly with Volumio. All works well, but I'm thinking of upgrading my external DAC (Caiman + Dorado) - don't get wrong - a perfectly good sound BUT (Upgraditis) has struck and I'm thinking of the new Cambridge M200 or Gustard X-16 or the RME ADI-2 DAC FS (more expensive).
My question is which is the best way to output from the Rpi to any new DAC. Do I need a new HAT or do I use the USB ports on the Rpi?
Oh, supplementary - is the RPi4 any better SQ-wise?
Thanks,
R

Hi all, again, I'm following this with interest.
Would anyone like to recommend a good BT5 receiver but without a built-in DAC?
I have a 'spare' USB input on my Beresford DAC - but probably I won't get a BT receiver with USB .
My dilemma: 1. Buy a BT5 receiver and hook it up to my present system. 2. Buy a Gustard x16 with built in BT; sell the Beresford 3. Buy the new Cambridge M200 DAC when it come out later this month - and sell the Beresford. 4. Buy the iFi Zen. 5. Leave things as they are - the Apple airplay seems to be working OK at present - for background music.
Any advice?
Thanks,

Am following this with interest. Has anyone tried using an iPhone and/or iPad, or Apple MacBook Pro (all of which use BT5.0) with these BT receivers?
~thanks.

..Upgrade-itis. My present day DAC (Caiman SEG+ Dorado PS) appears more than adequate. However, I'm keen on the Gustard. One problem is that the Caiman has 2 Toslink inputs and the Gustard only one. I really need two. However my AUDIOPHONICS I-Sabre V3 DAC ES9023 TCXO Raspberry Pi 2.0 A+ B+ / I2S - has, as you can see, an I2S output and the Gustard an IS2-H (IIS-H). Are the two compatible, and, would a normal HDMI cable be sufficient to link the two? All my system is 'unbalanced'. The Audiophonics gear is largely redundant as I view the Rpi+ Allo system slightly superior (see: theartofsound.net/forum/show...748#post900748)I'm largely ignorant of all the basic methods of inter-connects (I use RCA/Toslink/Optical - but not USB (well I do in my other system - but I'll ignore this at present). I know nothing about AES for example, (but it seems expensive!) Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

Topping E30.
Yep, I got one on the 4th of this month. Impressive for the price. I have an iFi PS on order although it works well with an external - Anker - battery.
Small; good range of inputs for its size. Not too keen on the front finger-sensitive switch.I thought that the SEG+ Dorado had a little more weight and detail - but not much in it (but my ears are 72 years old). I have it in my 2nd system. I shall keep it. Yet to do a comparison with a Dragonfly Red.

As if to prove what I already know, I tried the OTA update again tonight. No deal, it restarts to the same version. It could be my imagination...but... I thought the same thing...but after a few (?) reboots it did start up with the new interface. (Clearing the cache perhaps...?)

I've just dowloaded the update (v.2.599).
Settings/Appearances
scroll to bottom.. change from the beta v3 to 2.599.
Edit: This works OK but, with me, the rt hand roundel is now superimposed on the LH art work!
I may go back to v3. I didn't find it that bad.

...Wandering off-topic here I know...but continuing the Sinclair theme...was it you who told us that the later (and highly respected) Neoteric amp was a Class 'D'. If so it seems way before its time. Were there others before this? R

Yes Martin, I can recall being completely taken in by the Sinclair adverts...so much so I bought the lot...active filters, tuner etc. I too built the Linsey Hood. Etching one's own PCBs was a steep learning curve. I think I even incorporated the Pro 60 active filter unit into the LH design. There was a horrible switch-on screech from the amp if the phono section was engaged. I wonder if I still have it in the attic somewhere...?

A present-day, grown-up Sinclair Project 60?

My Allo Isolator has arrived. This Linear power supply is on its way: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HIFI-25W-...72.m2749.l2649I need a good quality lead from the LPS (BNC) to the USB-C socket on the isolator. Has anyone got any recommendations please...and should I add a choke too? Thanks, Bonky

I have a Rpi feeding an Allo Boss. I'm pleased with the SQ (and, IMHO, just beats the Rpi + Audiphonics Sabre -which I also have). Both are fed by a Linear PS.
The Kali piques my interest but I have some (naive) questions...
Do I have to use a 'Piano' board as well as the Kali or can I feed the Kali into my Beresford SEG DAC?.. If I can, which of the 2 options (Piano or SEG) will afford the best SQ -?(subjective I know!)
Imagine that money was (almost) no impediment ..what would be the best option?
Thanks,
Richard.
(Also on the AoS board - hope that's OK!)
