..Upgrade-itis. My present day DAC (Caiman SEG+ Dorado PS) appears more than adequate. However, I'm keen on the Gustard. One problem is that the Caiman has 2 Toslink inputs and the Gustard only one. I really need two. However my AUDIOPHONICS I-Sabre V3 DAC ES9023 TCXO Raspberry Pi 2.0 A+ B+ / I2S - has, as you can see, an I2S output and the Gustard an IS2-H (IIS-H). Are the two compatible, and, would a normal HDMI cable be sufficient to link the two? All my system is 'unbalanced'. The Audiophonics gear is largely redundant as I view the Rpi+ Allo system slightly superior (see: theartofsound.net/forum/show...748#post900748)I'm largely ignorant of all the basic methods of inter-connects (I use RCA/Toslink/Optical - but not USB (well I do in my other system - but I'll ignore this at present). I know nothing about AES for example, (but it seems expensive!) Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

I2S HDMI is fraught with inconsistencies. It depends on the Audiophonics I2S board being used. The main standard is PS Audio/Audio GD and the main alternative standard is Gustard/LKS etc. Check this spreadsheet for the pinouts to make sure that the two will talk to each other. Any full HDMI cable will work, but they do sound different. The best I found was the Blue Jeans HDMI cable, which is a good performer. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1h5PMUBkldkpt1rCnAR4ZHYGZNeCe-vwIFyKWYMZWsX0/edit#gid=853411704
