I bought an ebay ADC for around £10 and the amount of hiss it generated made it unlistenable. I suspected the PS, but no doubt you can put me right.

I watched a good one recently, Prime Broadchurch Unforgotten by The Replacement in The Line of Duty. First one was a bit of a marathon at 5 hours, just hope I have enough stamina for the next instalment.

Very sad. I must have read many of his reviews over the years.

I always like to see what others are listening to as I feel I have a fairly narrow band of stuff that I would listen to. I quite like this album and the first two tracks.

Yes, very annoying as I hate being ripped off. A few months ago I noticed that the 4 packs of Cadburys Flake/Twirl/Double Decker from a well known shop where 99p is just not quite enough money, that they were much smaller, whereas the one's the supermakets are now doing in the same packaging are the proper size (whatever the "proper" size actually now is)

Interesting. I suppose everyone hears differently and perhaps different things. I would not say that either incarnation (3886/3875) sound rolled off or dull to me, as that it is a characteristic that I avoid in an amplifier.

I was looking for some info on one of the Class D amps I have just resurrected and came across a site I had some input into some years ago. I am not sure whether to be impressed by my own reviewing "skills" or embarrassed if you have the stamina to read to the end. www.justblair.co.uk/gain-clones/gain-clones.html

I have always been philosophical about the timing of my demise so should I be bothered about the risk? I was under the impression that these were simple, not complex?

Funny how things go in three's. With "the wife" having taken to her sick bed a couple of weeks ago and in between my impersonating Basil Fawlty and chasing around like a lunatic catering for her every need, I found time to tinker with some abandoned DIY stuff that had gone a bit funny sometime ago.
One of these Pre's was a Lightspeed using LDRs (Light Dependant Resistors). I am probably teaching to the perverted so apologies if I appear be sucking eggs.
If anyone was a member of Diyaudio about 8 years ago there started a looooooong thread urging everyone to build one of these as they were "revolutionary", the pot is used as a voltage source and there are no moving parts in the signal chain. The parts count was very low so I built a couple for myself and some for friends. The one in front of me last week was a "proper" offering, by "proper" I mean it was built with a PCB not P2P and has matched LDRs. However, it didn't sound right. A bit of tinkering and it didn't take much to bring it on song.
An LDR Pre is a passive unit, but IMO it sounds so much more like an active pre. If you haven't tried one, you ought to give one a go. if you can use a soldering iron and follow a simple schematic, you can build one for about £20.

I used to think that any new component or cable would sound great......after all I had read the reviews and spent my hard earned on it! In the main the stuff I bought turned out alright, some was very good and some so so, but I never had any real disasters.....err did I?....oh yes....a Cambridge digital lead to use between a Discmagic and Dacmagic.....god knows what it was made from it sounded awful. Many years on I think I can honestly say that I treat all new stuff with contempt....well maybe that's a bit harsh, but I have no expectation that it will sound any good in my system....if it does it is of course a bonus.

Expectation Bias (IMO) reduces quite considerably if you don't listen everyday. I used to and due to various reasons might only mow get to fire the beast up once or twice a week. It always sound great as I am there to listen to music.

Yes Jerry, they all have their own flavour. I have tried TA2024, TA2020, TPA3116 (raved about, but not really my cup of tea) A Sure 100w per channel board with fan (which I removed) not sure of the chipset but sounds good and an STA508, that I got years ago, checked it worked and never did anything else with it. Oh and the 2024s that I blew up in the early days....DON'T SHORT THE SPEAKER OUTS!

What's the total cost of a thing like that then, Rob? Well, having been asked and totting it all up.......a bit more than I expected. I built it for nowt as my mate has done a lot of computer based stuff for me over the years. I've shed loads of bits so all he had to buy was the case. However here is a breakdown :- Board : £9 - 10 Binding posts £5 - 8 RCA sockets £3- 5 Case £12 Then you need a switch and DC input socket and a 12v power supply. I am sure there are fully built Tripath TA2024 chip amps on ebay for less.

My mate wanted an amp to use with his PC. Space is at a premium and I suggested a small Class D. I made loads of them years ago and said I thought I might have some boards knocking about. I tried in my system and I had forgotten how good these little things were. I see boards similar to this are about £9 now, I am sure I paid more than that.

Paracetamol and Ribena. "her indoors" has had Pneumonia for nearly two weeks, Anti-B's all used up so back to Doc today as she is no better. Oh dear, not good. I had Pneumonia a couple of years ago and know how unpleasant it can be. Hope your wife gets better very soon. Spent all day at Guildford Hosp yesterday, left her there o/night for intravenous anti-b's and steroids as well. Who was it who sang "thiiiiiiiings can only get better".
