I hated the look of early HD . . . . I still do . . .
LOL - me too. Do you remember Collateral from 2004? A decent film from Michael Mann which conveniently avoided any serious scrutiny of the image quality. It was his first digital production.

Indeed, the difference between watching a decent regular or 4K Blu-ray Vs 4k streaming is night and day in terms of picture quality.

Debut album from Mamogi featuring bass superstar Mohini Dey.
Jazz and bass enthusiasts should investigate.

Well I can't disagree with any of that Tim but what I can say from my own perspective is that I am a lot more relaxed about technical details than I was when I was making films. I used to be much more sensitive and hypercritical I guess - whilst I was watching a film or commercial I was always analysing the shots if there was a camera, lighting or VFX technique that I didn't understand or was interested in using myself. Makes it more difficult to immerse yourself in a film.
The advent of HD was painful for me as there was great pressure to use it from producers to save money and I had been used to working on 35mm for some years but it has taken well over a decade for HD cameras to be serious capture tools in my eyes. I hated the look of early HD, it often looked so amateurish compared to film even in the hands of elite cinematographers, especially in low light. Some directors were often much more casual in the way they shot with it because tape or storage is so cheap, which of course is not conducive to a high quality end product. The most disciplined directors are often the most successful.

This article is from 2018 but it wouldn't surprise me if the state of play is similar today.
Spotify charges different amounts in each country according to what the market can take. I get that. You can't charge as much in the Philippines as you can in Western economies but who is top of the charging tree? That's right, good ol' UK! The USA has a much higher GDP but pays less.
Jumping forward to 2024. Premium in the USA is $10.99 (£8.77) and £11.99 in the UK.
That's a 22.5% difference. Please explain why.
Why do we always get taken for such mugs in this country? Probably because we very rarely complain enough en masse.

Triangle of Sadness What an unexpected treat. I was expecting a good film by its reputation but I came to it knowing so little about it. Turns out to be a highly entertaining and at times outrageously funny social satire. I won't give much away but it has some of the most spectacular projectile vomiting committed to film. On Netflix now. Have you seen Force Majeure? That's really good and so much better than the trashy Hollywood remake Downhill. Not seen that Tim, so added to my Amazon watchlist thanks!

Yes I saw them a while back but when ready I'm going to start with a computing brand "non-audiophile" switch ...

I have run the test via my mobile phone and am getting a B rating. Looking more closely it shows the set up is not optimised for low latency gaming, which my son knows already ...
In terms of optimising further for audio I would need to buy a new router as the Sky router doesn't have QoS from what I read. I'd be willing to do that but would have to be sure it works with Sky.
Excellent thread, thank you Martin.

Lol.
It will be difficult for him to sustain these top level orchestral appointments without a recording career to match.
But he's still a very young guy who has charisma on the podium - I've seen him on Arte TV with the Orchestre de Paris and enjoyed the performance. Time will tell!
And we get to see his Rite of Spring later this year, the live performances of which have been very well received from what I have read.

I dislike his recordings because they suck."

My sister-in-law lives in Pukekohe, Auckland, and I do intend visiting her one day. Finished The Gone last night - my suspicions were correct but the story isn't over!

Now to the sound quality. Everything sounds vibrant and presented slightly differently to the Qobuz sound. Interesting Steve. Of course I may find that I am happy to stay with good ol' fashioned Spoti Premium.

Rachel Podger's T4S from 2018 is superb - terrific performance as you would expect from one of the leading baroque specialists and also excellent recording quality (as ever) from Channel Classics.

Going to see the in-laws again soon on the mainland but am very keen to visit Crete and Corfu in the future.
We've been to Thassos, Limnos and Samothraki some years ago - all were very beautiful in their own way but priority goes to family visits.

I wonder if I will go back to NZ one more time. . . . I often wonder that, only been once and planned out a 3 week trip of both islands . . . it took me 4 months to do it and I very nearly stayed!
I'd love to hear about that trip some time Tim - I only visited the North island but it left quite an impression on me.

I still have a tiny Maori wood carving, made into a keyring, that I've kept all these years. As the series develops you see more and more Maori culture which has been interesting. One more ep to go. I have an inkling who the killer is but don't know what the motive could be ... I wonder if I will go back to NZ one more time. It's tempting as mum has always wanted to go.
