I thought it's about time Hurwitz has his own thread here.
This time: Charles Dutoit, once promoted as one of the all-time greats but his downfall and reputation was swift and nothing to do with his playing.

I do agree that the organ at St Eustache is entirely inadequate for the Saint-Saens 3rd.

Must be imagining things.

I can only applaud DH for taking a firm stance on the casual sexism and misogyny thrown at Yuja Wang on his channel. The comments on Slipped Disc can be just as unpleasant.
One thing that baffles me which Dave didn't mention is that very often these comments come from women! You couldn't make it up. It's a neo-Victorian attitude towards what they consider prim, proper and socially acceptable behaviour. Just incredible.

What does it matter? She plays like a boss and sounds stupendous. She can do it wearing anything she likes, as far as I'm concerned. So can Nicola Benedetti and Alison Balsom. It doesn't mean I can't appreciate their good looks, but to pass negative comments on their choice of garment is crossing the line.

I couldn't agree more. It depresses me that she has to deal with this kind of crap in this day and age. I am sure that she will continue doing what she wants though and more power to her!

"Leave the kiddies to play out in the yard, their time will come too."
Very interesting editorial that DH actually wrote 20 years ago that is just as relevant today - the core audience for classical music is and always will be older people with time on their hands to explore and appreciate the music. But promoters are afraid of this, as shown by the seasonal attempts to get more hip and crossover. Of course the people with the most disposable income to spend on classical music are the older ones yet label execs are trying every play in the handbook to appeal to 20-30 somethings. It's a yearly game they play and when it doesn't quite work they just do the same again, with the same results.
I think in London we have a pretty good mix of ages at most concerts I go to, depending on the time of course, but the core audience is always an older one of course and what's wrong with that? Promoters and execs will ignore this audience at their peril unless they really want to see ticket and cd sales dry up.

Excellent debate here on the "hypocrisy of classical record collectors".
I can't disagree with any of it.

He may (or may not) have wonderful taste, but I cannot get along with his seemingly smug, superior, attitude. All he says to me is "I am the ultimate arbiter of YOUR taste, because I am so much more intelligent than you. I've listened to far more music than you, so I obviously know best."

I'm fortunate in that my tastes coincide with him a lot so I find it genuinely useful that he has listened to a zillion performances of whatever so I don't have to - it saves me a lot of leg work. His honest insights into the classical music industry always engage me and I just find him very funny indeed.
