Makes it even more incredible that Stephen Hawking has survived for so long.
Was he related to Steve, Jeff and Joe Porcaro, all musicians?

Very Chris, Andy was just so much fun and a great musician to boot and then there was that song . . .
Found out via a tweet from Joe Bonamassa who is playing Hammersmith Apollo tonight, I wonder what he will do as a tribute?

Was he related to Steve, Jeff and Joe Porcaro, all musicians? He was the middle brother of Toto members Jeff Porcaro and Steve Porcaro. Their father is jazz drummer-percussionist Joe Porcaro.

That was the reason I first asked about Mike's relatives. I have James Newton Howard and Friends on Sheffield Lab direct cut (LAB23) and it features Steve Porcaro on synths, Jeff Porcaro on drums and Joe Porcaro on percussion.
By the way, its the best recording of drums I have ever heard, bar none. A quite outstanding example of what can be done on vinyl.

Sad to hear about the passing of (yet) another of my guitar heroes, John Renbourn. I love this, from an interview he did recently...
Now it's time for me to dig out Faro Annie I think.

I can't see it listed, so just mentioning that mastering engineer Doug Sax passed away on Thursday due to cancer. His career spans longer than my lifetime, and although much of his work isn't of much interest to me, he did master The Doors' L.A. Woman and Roger Waters' Amused To Death - probably the main albums I like from his catalogue. His last album he worked on was Bob Dylan's Shadows In The Night.

I didn't know that. Gosh, what a shame to lose someone who has contributed so much to music. A sentence from his Wiki page is rather telling as to the impact he made on the lives of anyone who has ever heard any music since about 1957 : There is a discography here and it is an astonishing list of records.

Doug Sax was a legend in his own lifetime. I have so many albums mastered by him and they all have the stamp of quality sound. A true loss to the recording world.
