Sad to learn today of the death of Gerry Goffin. Along with lyricist and one-time wife Carol King, Goffin and King wrote a whole stream of successful hit tunes performed by Diana Ross, The Everly Brothers, The Shirelles, Bobby Vee, Whitney Houston, and Gladys Knight and the Pips amongst others. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-27934624

I didn't know that, Barry. Thanks.
Carole King's music is very familiar to me, and I have an album of his daughter's, Louise Goffin, whom I saw live back in the 1980s.

He wrote so many of those utterly wonderful songs. RIP
We sadly lost Horace Silver yesterday as well.

All in all, a bad day for music.

RIP Bobby Womack
Shocked and saddened are the words I use, a trued legend, will be sadly missed, I have nearly worn out his newset LP The bravest man in the universe I play it that much.

Indeed, I just hadn't thought he was particularly old. Very sad to hear it this morning.

He was 70 and if you were into 1980's soul and funk he was a demi-god. His latest LP was written with Damon Albarn and its played at my house every other day.

There was more to what he did than that though - he was Sam Cooke's guitarist and also played on some of Aretha Franklin's early albums for example.

Lorin Maazel, the first American and the first Jew in the postwar period to conduct at Bayreuth has passed away at the age of 84. We also lost Claudio Abbado back in January; it's not been a good year for the giants of the baton thus far.

I was sad at Abbado's passing and celebrated Maazel's life with some excellent recordings of his.
