After what could be described as a "quiet period" the Grim Reaper seems to have returned from his holiday. R.I.P. Matt "Guitar" Murphy, guitarist for the Blues Brothers and noted sideman for blues legends like Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Memphis Slim, who died Friday at the age of 88. OBIT

I have quite a few memories of Gennady Rozhdestvensky, as JVC sponsored a number of his recordings when I was with them. My favourite memory is of the first time I met him. He had arrived in the UK to work with the BBC and JVC had just launched the first portable VHS recorder and camera onto the market. We got an urgent telex from Japan telling us to organise a reception with the classical music press etc., plus a photographer so we could present him with the system for his "Services to music". Oh yes and btw this has to happen in two days so they had pics for the launch of one of his recordings on Victor (Japan). We got it organised just in time including real russian caviar for the canapés and as the JVC execs all lined up for the great mans arrival the MD asked, "How do you pronounce his name"? There was considerable discussion about this, with nobody being quite sure. As the cab arrived and he got out, there was an awkward silence, then stepped forward, shook his hand and said... "Maestro so pleased to meet you, Welcome to JVC" I then grabbed one of his aides and checked the pronunciation, in time for the MD's speech.

I have two of his recordings on the JVC/Melodiya combined label. They are excellent, although the engineer in charge of the Shostakovich 15th recording must have been on some good stuff if his 'fader frenzy' in highlighting certain instruments is anything to go by.

I know what you mean, I had loads of the Russian recorded JVC stuff and still have quite a bit, as they used to send it to me to use in our demos. Sadly, the Russian engineers had not grasped either co-incedent pair or "Keep it simple stupid"

Sad to report the passing of Chas Hodges of "Chas & Dave" fame, aged 74. Chas had a long pedigree before Chas & Dave: he had recorded with Joe Meek, been in the Outlaws with Ritchie Blackmore (which later led to him playing bass for Deep Purple at one show). He played with Jerry Lee Lewis and Gene Vincent. Most famously, the hook he and Peacock recorded for Labi Siffre’s I Got The … became the chassis of Eminem’s first hit, My Name Is. I first got to know his name as a member of Albert Lee's band, Heads, Hands, And Feet and later on, I used to thoroughly enjoy playing "Ain’t No Pleasing You" with my old band. Chas and Dave were written off as a "novelty" act in some quarters, but along with their original drummer, Micky Burt, they were terrific musicians who'd long-since earned their chops. Dave Peacock is last man standing now. Obit

Marty was still touring in 2016 and released an album in the same year, and while I was double-checking my dates I came across this...
Another little piece of my youth has gone.

It's been said that she was known "affectionately" as " Monsterfat Caballé" although I fail to see the affection in that soubriquet. Hopefully, the '92 duet with Freddie prompted some people to investigate her work more thoroughly. She had a beautiful voice.
