As I think I knew but never take for granted a couple of days using Cascade has either settled in/burned in the Auva,s and them sound had become more subtle and refined . I keep noticing quiet back ground sounds that I had not noticed before . Bass is now very much tighter and there is no boom to it . Depth of texture to bass is also noticeable . I like the Auva,s and would say if you can get a loan try them out they work much more on standard box speakers than my Quads but they also improve those to a good degree too . I will now have to reign things in for the rest of this year and consider getting a trial of the 100,s next year because I fully expect them to be much better and I know I will have to buy a set . bencat : Your recent findings mirror my own I quote from a previous entry "Well I can see why those using conventional drivers get all excited by these feet after they settle they allow them speakers to have better controlled bass with lots more texture . Soundstage is wider and deeper , voices sound real and coming from a mouth rather than a sort of indefinite area" That is almost exactly what I found with Auva 50's under my OTA Quads & Rupert stands particularly the textured bass Auva 70's give even more & as I have written Auva 100's took my OTA Quads in to a different league with layered bass not the almost monotone that the 57's tend to. "Soundstage is wider and deeper, voices sound real" also with 100's little voice inflections on well known albums & never heard before as are background noises occasionally maracas, tambourine, & voices as are hidden in Back in the USSR "I will now have to reign things in for the rest of this year and consider getting a trial of the 100,s next year because I fully expect them to be much better and I know I will have to buy a set". bencat, if you try them, I'm afraid so...

Well things get really good and systems are producing excellent quality music so we all should take a break and enjoy things right ? Well reading the various blogs shows us that almost never happens . And so it is with me I have bought a third Aurex SY15 power amp having already bought two previously when these I use in my two way active system to power my Active Linn Sara 9,s . I now have a couple of days I can use the Aurex , first is make two of them bridged mono,s and power the Sara,s bass mid one each side . Then the third Aurex as a stereo amp can power both speakers treble . This will most likely be my first step and see how that goes . But as I now have three matches stereo power amps I football put them in my three way system and power the bass mid and treble using one for each . So that will happen and will see how each system changes . More projects for when Linda is at work .

So quite a few days now without my Quads and tweaking things with the Totem 1 signature speakers . I have not changed my speakers that often so I forget how much time you need to take with speakers to get them to sing . Totems were set up close to the front wall and sounded good . With Auva feet and black ravioli pads they jumped up in quality quite a way sounding more open and real . I read a review of these speakers on Stereophile and the writer used them quite a distance out in to the room 36" at one stage but settling on 20" in the end . So I moved them towards me but not as much settled on about 12" as best and they are now sounding lovely with a nice natural balance and sounds both behind and away from the speakers . They have also now lost that feeling of smearing I first heard and closer to the Quads . Yet for all of this it is still obvious to to my ears they are box bound and I want my Quads back 😊

Bar none." "Since I added the feet, that estimation has gone upwards!" to plagiarise & slightly paraphrase The Aussie Audiophile as well. Quad 57's "you cant unhear them can you" I also hear the boxes most speakers are in. Listening to the demo system of my dear friend Mark Manwaring-White (Malvern Audio Research) in a very large room he uses giant horn speakers with 15" bass speakers I do like their presentation & the sweet spot is at least his big 3/4 seat settee wide with deep bass. On returning home, in my lounge I prefer my OTA Quad 57's on Rupert stands on Auva 100's, one of the benefits of the Auva 100's I have not mentioned before, Quad 57's have a notoriously small sweet spot. with the Auva 100's I am able to sit either side of our 10'5" wide room & sitting 14' from the face onOTA Quad 57'ss , furniture & record cabinets mean 12"-14" right or left shoulders from the actual walls so a 7'6" wide area from which a central image is heard, a central position affords much less benefit than before the advent of Auvas in my system. I repeat this is in my sonically advantageously dimensioned lounge, with "my system" despite & only in our lounge, a wood floor over a concrete void, since fitting the Auva 100's the OTA Quad 57's are no longer exciting resonances in the floor which may be a reason?.

Right just as I was getting used to the Totem 1 Signatures and had gotten the positioning right my friend who lent them to me said he had a buyer for them so could I bring them back . Fair enough and being the true gentleman he is he said I have a pair of Francis Munoz LS3/5A speakers you can borrow . Well I heard the BBC design a few times at different systems and at shows but never had a pair in my system . So to start with I have just placed them in the same position as the Totems . Will get around to setting them up later but they sound so nice straight from cold that I may well just leave them . Unlike the Totems which were a bit tight and smeared in the bass on first listen the LS sound lovely from the Totems off . They are quite a bit different in presentation to the Totems being lighter in the bass but with better resolution . They seem to voiced much closer to the Quads in particular for voices which have that very natural and realistic tone . So my Quads going away has given me a very nice chance to hear two sets of really good speakers both of which I could live with .

Left the Munoz clones on playing the Cascade file and no one here is going to be surprised that they sounded even sweeter than yesterday . I can see why this design has lots of devotees . However I am still bemused at the prices original examples go for compared to well made units like these . No matter how good they are I have a price ceiling for small stand mounts above which I can see why they should cost so much . I would quite like a pair of these to have for back up and a change but they would need to be at sensible price levels .
