I missed the exposure stuff. So, I am thinking of Chord Signature mk1 or VDH The Wind Mk2

I'd be inclined to skip over all this with my usual "maybe but there are more important things" approach, were it not for the extraordinary result at your place, wonky. I have been very happy with the talk 3's, but if I get a chance this weekend I'll plug in the chord flat cables again, and see whether it makes any sort of worthwhile difference. And I am due to see the boy Khoubesserian, who in true Baldrick style (you have to know the guy) has another cunning plan he wants to chat through. I could borrow a pair of his silly money cables, which allegedly (his rep's claim) blow all and sundry including hyper-priced Van den Huls out of the water. I'll report back if I do I hae me doots though... ESL speakers though - no, that calls for a fresh post

Yes, the difference was quite a shock wasn't it? I'll never forget the look on your face. I think it is probably the best demonstration you could give to a "cables make no difference" believer.

Martin, Cat5 works well with valve amps I think, not so good with Linn and Naim I hear? Know about Ultra Black, have never had it in my system though to compare. Only TQ Black, which to me the Cat5 bettered. My speakers are internally wired with Cat5 so may be a synergy thing. Out of curiosity, what is it that makes amps unstable with it, its impedance or something?

It has an extremely high capacitance apparently .

Any cable reactance - inductance or capacitance, can render some amps unstable especially if they don't have a Zobel stability network on their outputs. Naim are commonly quoted, but there are others too.

Ask around before you do Chris
I'd be very wary using CAT5 for speaker leads
Hopefully a tech mind will pop up shortly to advise

I run jumper length speaker cables so can experiment for not too much moola...I have TQ Ultra black which is very revealing and in my system slightly fatiguing-it sounds very hi-fi(honest). My favourite alternative is doubled up runs of TQ black-its more natural sounding and musical at the detriment of a slight loss of detail and sound stage. I have no shame in using cables as tone controls!!! TQ blue is sold off the reel and has the same house sound as black but again is further down the scale sonically.
The budget cables talk/belkin/rhodium twist/van damme are all good but can be bettered. Dare say synergy will have a big say, oh and your preference regards distortion.

The trouble is, cables are the hardest items to loan for trials, excepting those few dealers who offer buy-and-try policies.

Have a read here Chris. www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/triple_t_e.htmlIt kicks ass with a valve amp. Cant speak for solid state jobbies like Linn and Naim. Can only say what it does in my own system, and that's all I'm doing. I got my cables from Ali (he made them). Ping him a PM and he'll answer yer questions bud.

I have ordered some Belden RG8U coax cable as it seems identical to the Chord Signature speaker cable in all but price.
I also contacted the eBay seller Bout the exposure cable, and he still has it. So, how easy is the exposure to terminate? I only need 1/6th of it, so I could sell the rest of it on to cover my costs.

If I go for the Chord cables, there is a 14 day return policy. It's tempting as I have heard that they are very good, but if they are based on the coax cable I have bought, then I have just saved £160. I guess that there is only one way to tell.

if you buy them over the net or phone , 14 day return is a breach of the law . It isnt long enough .
therefore it isnt in fact a plus point for chord .
Assuming you are of course correct in your synopsis of their sales policy .

It's not direct from Chord, but a dealer. Thanks for the info though.

TQ ultra black is ruthless with shite recordings-fatiguing was probably the wrong description. It gives you warts and all with little colouration I can detect. It is by some margin the best speaker wire I have tried in my set ups.
I was wondering if anyone had tried the graham slee cable it seems to get some very favourable write ups?

Yes. I have just tried some on the 2 week trial system. It didn't work well in my system, but Graham has mentioned pion his Forum that he is thinking of doing a larger cross sectional area version for system that require higher power.
