Went to a fabulous castle today - Chateau de castelnau - one of Simon de Montforts conquests on the albigensian crusade. Marvelous display of period weaponry including working Trebuchets. Watched a blacksmith forge a hairpin in the style of a leaf from a metal rod. Can post some pics later if anyone interested

It's been many years since I was last in Rome, but it's on our visit list.

I got back yesterday. If you don't like the heat, avoid Rome in August!

It was a mere 35 degrees C, and an early start each day meant we missed most of the crowds (we had priority tickets as part of the package as well, which meant little queuing).
The fountain de Trevi was dry, and under restoration work, as was the fountain at the bottom of the Spanish steps. We had a good time during our stay.

Sorry. I've been distracted making an offer on a house without a view of a castle (I am assured, in the right light, you can see the tour Magdala at Rennes le Chateau, but its been the wrong light so far). Internet is not lightening either The castle of Simon de Montfort (chief officer of the "crusade" against the Languedoc) The photo of this knight on his steed doesnt do it justice. The horse was so lifelike - it was the way its eye seemed to follow you Some crossbows (with ornate decoration - although instruments of war) More in another post...

Forging a steel hairpin with as a branch and leaf, from a steel rod, using tools available in the period The finished hairpin, in my own fair hands And, finally, 3 trebuchets

So, Monsieur Pinkie, the question that I can't help but ask is: did you hear anyone shouting "Your muzzeeer is a hamster and your fazzer smells of elderberries"?
