Well it's all very well you people with cameras, taking photographs of other peoples big houses, but how many of you have lived in a castle? I can confirm that, although I am just a simple lad from the out o' the woods, I did indeed once live in a castle. It was actually what would probably described as a fortified house, but the central core of the place (a turret containing my staircase) was the only remaining part of the original 12th century castle.
I had a 34' x 18' x 15' living room, in which my hi-fi sounded incredible and, due to the nature of the place the volume control on the amp was often subjected to a generous dose of the twisty action.
I also had a 30' long kitchen and five bedrooms, each with a name. My bedroom was the Jerusalem Room. All was not sweetness and light though, because the little en-suite bathroom was a tiny turret built onto the corner of the building and in winter the 270 degrees of outside stone wall and no central heating meant that I would often find in the winter that my toothpaste contained tiny little crystals of ice. Ouch!

It was great but bloody cold. My part was one of the wings, probably only about a fifth or less than the entire building. The main part was occupied by a family of three, who probably could have had 10 or so rooms each and only see each other every few days! My door key was about 9 inches long?!

No, I was just renting the wing, and for a silly low price too. It was back at the end of the 80s and the rent was 88 quid a month. They rented another rather posher part for spells in the summer to (usually American) tourists and I suspect they charged a signicantly higher price for that.

When was the last time you visited the castle losenotaminute?
It's one of those things no one from Edinburgh ever seems to do!!
I was there about a year ago and it's a superb day out. Is your office on Princes St? I've always thought the offices just opposite the car park on Castle terrace must have great views - and the nice flats there(same architect who designed the pagoda house) must be even better!
Easy to forget how fortunate we are, especially when you pass it on a day to day basis.

I've not been to the Tattoo yet, it's all a bit too martial for my taste. My office is on Lothian Road but I work on the top floor and have a good view of the Castle, I also walk through Princes Street gardens on my way to work. I'll try and snap a few pictures on my way in today, but the sky has clouded over now so it's not ideal conditions.

On the "not strictly a castle" theme (we would have lots of castles where we are going, its Cathar country) This place was the reason I discovered the Languedoc, and just to please Losenotaminute - it always feels a bit magic here Rennes-le-chateau (just round the corner from the house we want)
