We don't have a thread for DIY so I thought I'd start one. I've been building a 6.2m scaffold inside our barn in order to reach the very high pent ceiling 3 storeys up. There is an electric cable dangling there ever since we moved in, so I had the bright idea of installing a statement chandelier from it down into the atrium. I have already reached over from the top balcony and established that there is power to it, and we found the light switch by trying every one on every panel until we identified it.
This is all very well as a plan, but the scaffold arrived yesterday and reality hit. It took all my effort to build it on my own, and it's impressive but it wobbles some when I'm at the top. Now to do some tests, find battens and decide how best to support the 5kg weight of the iron cartwheel chandelier. Onwards...

Scaffolding Very useful stuff. If only I had realised what lazy idiots our builders were when it was up during the refurb Couple of years later I was pulling pieces of brick, concrete, roof tiles, nails and other after the guttering blocked. On a ladder so time consuming.
Thought of getting some, or a tower to do the bits required at 2 storey height. So much easier than a ladder
This year we will have our dodgy roof looked over, courtesy of a cherry picker which our man Pete can borrow. Don't like heights but I'll be up there having a good look around to see what other horrors were left to us and trying to work out any draughts to be plugged
3 storeys up I would be even less keen on !

You might have been better off hiring a small scissor lift.

You might have been better off hiring a small scissor lift. We looked at those and didn't think we could get one through the front door. Not sure they could do 6m+ without stabilisers and there is limited floor space. I haven't used the stabiliser poles on the scaffold for the same reason. Have stopped most of the wobble by tying a rope around a high beam.

Take a good look at that episode of Only Fools and Horses before you proceed any further.

Nope. Eyes closed to ceilings caving in, etc.
Dammit, you made me say it.

Have you got a pic of the chandelier Martin, or are you saving that for the big reveal ...

Have you got a pic of the chandelier Martin, or are you saving that for the big reveal ... It's still in its box, Jules. Once the scaffold is down - two stages done, the hardest one left to do because of the height of the floor - then I can sort out that end and gently lower it from the balcony. I deliberately left more chain and electric cable than required and will use my bolt cutter to break a link at the right point and use a link joiner in its place. Photo when it's all done and working.

All sorts of material left here courtesy of the builders who did our house refurb. I also pulled things out of the skip that were going into landfill. Useful stuff waiting for the right moment About 4 metres long this little fellow is heavy. Really heavy. A little bridge over a ditch in the fields became dangerous, falling to pieces. Light bulb moment for little me. Wheelbarrow might do it.... Did. That was hard work and I need at least one other lunatic to help me finish off and bridge the ditch My hero moments for the day. My arms are tired

Thanks very much Hoping for super strong man and Step son to be here fairly soon.
Have to somehow throw one end over the ditch
It's that heavy I can only just lift one end - as I had to half a dozen times to put it back on the wheelbarrow
Stepson is clever so he could well come up with something easy and obvious once explained !
