I kind of gave up on Ridley after The Martian, which I thought was excellent - not done it before, but I've just looked through his filmography and for me he's made 7 what I'd call really outstanding films, but those 7 are masterpieces IMO - very few directors make 1 masterpiece during their entire career, let alone 7! I find he's just gone a bit too Hollywood for my tastes, which is very much Indie and art house now. I was really looking forward to Napoleon so I may still see it . . . I'll await an honest appraisal from MartinT

I'll go and see Napoleon at the BFI Imax in London - I think the battle sequences will be suitably epic!

The one that's often missed out is The Counselor. Absolutely gripping cartel thriller with great performances (Cameron Diaz especially) and a gut wrenching ending.

Apparently, a panellist on Have I Got News For You last night suggested that ABBA's version of Waterloo is more historically accurate than Ridley Scott's.

Apparently, a panellist on Have I Got News For You last night suggested that ABBA's version of Waterloo is more historically accurate than Ridley Scott's. Just saw Andrew Roberts (British Historian) being interviewed on Sky News and he said about 38 minutes of Napoleon was accurate - Ridley apparently told him to fuck off as he wasn't there so how does he know! He's not helping himself is he, although they do say there's no such thing as bad publicity. I don't really understand why he's made anything up, there must be enough materiel about Napoleon to make an entire series without making stuff up?
I think I'll go and see it though as I found out a lot was filmed in Malta and being from Malta that interests me, particularly the filming in Mdina which is a beautiful city. I guess all this negative press is helpful, as my expectations are really low at the moment, so hopefully it will exceed them

I didn't know that. Were you born there?

I didn't know that. Were you born there? I was indeed - my Dad flew maritime reconnaissance in Avro Shackleton's. Been back a number of times over the years and really love Mdina.

The movie feels like watching people walk around wearing period garb as costumes. There is no atmosphere and there is no time for fleshing out a character that would be interesting to watch. I think Ridley's other film The Last Duel has a bit more menace in the characters though in that one too a main actor, Adam Driver, also comes off a bit silly though while set in a grim time within very serious circumstances and, unlike Napoleon, you do get a sense of the stakes involved for the main characters.

Well I'm sorry to be what feels a lone voice of dissent but "Anatomy" doesn't make it into the "remarkable" thread. It's a good film, perhaps a very good film but no more than that for me and I'm missing quite how it did so well at Cannes. It's not a film that will linger long in my memory. I thought the enigmatic ending was the best thing in the film and the young boy is an excellent performer. The use of Chopin's 4th Prelude was inspired and strangely enough I saw the whole set being performed only yesterday!
I would have been happy to see it on TV but it was good to make my first foray into the local independent cinema which is a decent venue and seems to get a good following. The screen is very modest of course, the projection isn't state of the art but good enough and the sound is better than expected. I will go there to see Maestro.

That's a shame Jules, I thought it was very good, extremely powerful performances, perfectly paced and a very immersive story - I completely bought into every character. But it's definitely not mainstream entertainment so not for everyone. I want to see it again actually! I've already decided I'm giving Maestro a miss, I can't set myself up for another disappointment after The Killer and Napoleon - but let us know? That looks like another soap opera rather than a biopic of Bernstein's musical talent, I've had my fill of relationship centered studies, especially after suffering Napoleon clucking his tongue and scrapping his imaginary hoof, in pursuit of a shag with Josephine. I think Riley Scott has totally lost the plot and he's got the brass neck to criticise Martin Scorsese and his work ethic

Maestro is a must for me.
Here's something ludicrous - the Alien franchise is being revived with a film set in between the first two films - just why???

It's not doomed to failure I guess - Fede Álvarez directed the rather excellent Don't Breathe ...

I'll likely catch up with Maestro at some point, but don't plan on seeing it at the cinema. I've been put off by the reports it's more about his relationships than the music and a bit too Hollywood as a film. So I'll look forward to your review - that might make me change my mind
Good grief, another Alien movie! The first two are superb, seen them multiple times but lost interest after that. I have seen them all . . . didn't really enjoy the last four to be honest.

Yes the first two were masterpieces then it all went a bit pearshaped ... Saying that, the last two in the series were actually ok if not especially memorable.
