I'm quite fortunate having a really good Art's Centre just down the road Jules. As I volunteer there, I get to see the films as part of that - which is perfect for a film lover of indie and world cinema, as that's about 75% of what they feature. It's a win win

Saw the new Scorsese film the other day - Killers of the Flower Moon . . . 3h 26m!
Tis' a loooong film, but not overly long as the story unfolds at a good pace and the editing is superb, so I didn't find it as tiresome as some seem to . . . it could perhaps have been a tighter scripted 3h film though. It's a really interesting (and sad) story too, I'm reading the book at the moment and plan to see it again next week.
My thoughts;
It's a good film but I don't think it's exceptional as some things REALLY bugged me about it . . in one word DiCaprio, his performance is not good compared to the other three main characters, definitely the weakest link and that's all I'll say without spoilers. Lily Gladstone is absolutely brilliant as Mollie Burkhart - Oscar worthy in my opinion, De Niro is very good too. Mixed feelings about the ending which is a rather unusual way to conclude a film based on a true story - I'm on the fence as to whether its a stroke of genius or a bit pretentious.
The final closing shot however is incredibly moving - I really liked how he tied it off, both visually and musically.
Some of the music didn't work for me, but I'm being picky as I hold Scorsese to a higher standard when it comes to cinema. It's only a very small section but as people are calling it a masterpiece, for me a masterpiece is without flaws and I feel this has some, not many to be fair as 95% of the music is superb, but I thought some was misplaced and didn't fit the time period.
I loved the inclusion of some very highly regarded musicians with more than just walk on parts. I won't say more in case you don't know them, but I loved that he included them and he must have similar music tastes to me
Overall though, it's a good film that could have been exceptional but for the few things I didn't like, but that's very subjective. It's definitely worth seeing in a cinema rather than waiting for Apple TV.
I enjoyed this much more than The Irishman and despite my minor niggles, it's still one of the best films of 2023.

BFI Player & MUBI limited time offers.
Probably not of much interest here, but just in case it is both MUBI and BFI Player have offers on at the moment for yearly subscriptions. You can get 12 months of MUBI for only £60.00 and 12 months BFI for £40.00.
The MUBI offer ends on Monday 13th November, not sure when the BFI one ends. Both platforms feature Independent, World and Art House cinema only, you won't see Marvel or Hollywood blockbuster films on either - they also only show films, no TV drama series.

The BFI offer looks good value. I'm going to look at what films they offer. Perhaps I could take out a cheeky pre-retirement sub.

One other advantage over MUBI is they have a rental section too, which gives you access to some films that often don't pop up on MUBI - there is some crossover between the two platforms, but not so much for me to think they're both not worth having. I subscribe to both as I only watch films these days, haven't done long form TV drama for years and really don't miss it.

Is that Princess Irulan (pictured) whom he must marry in order to keep the uneasy peace with the Empire?

Is that Princess Irulan (pictured) whom he must marry in order to keep the uneasy peace with the Empire? Correct, played by Florence Pugh who is one of my favourite actors. She's a superstar in my book . . . first saw her in Lady Macbeth in 2016 which I went into blind, been a fan ever since.
That's a very good film by the way, but what makes it is her performance - a 5 star film for me, superb cinematography and wonderful sound design, saw it 3 times in the cinema as I was that impressed. It's a very cinematic experience, not sure how well it would work on a TV though..

I think I'll be giving this a miss . . . there will doubtless be plenty who disagree, but I think Ridley Scott is past his sell by date. He has made some truly outstanding films, but he's now just churning out schmaltzy mainstream Hollywood fodder IMO.
He's not pleased about the criticism either, even had a pop at Dan Snow when he pointed out the historical inaccuracies (of which there are many), saying he should 'get a life'. He even had a pop at Martin Scorsese saying he's only made 1 film in the time he's made 4. I'll take 1 good Scorsese film over 4 pap films anyday.
Only has 62% on Rotten Tomatoes at the moment, which isn't great - I'll wait to see what Mark Kermode thinks, but at the moment I'm going to pass . . . even as a freebie!

He even had a pop at Martin Scorsese saying he's only made 1 film in the time he's made 4. Not the sort of warped logic one would expect from anyone with even a smidgen of artistic talent and/or temperament. I bet Joaquin Phoenix is not a patch on Ian Holm in The Time Bandits either.

I think I'll go see it and judge for myself. Let us know what you think Martin?
The firing at the tops of the pyramids scene and the 'look at my vagina' scene were enough for me to decide it's not my thing, but I'm not into mainstream entertainment, so it's not likely to be. Hopefully you'll enjoy it as I know you like Ridley.

New Ridley Scott film 'The Last Duel'. I've become a bit of a Ridley Scott fan. Will look forward to see this. Shockingly good/bizarrely great performance by Jodie Comer in this Ridley Scott film and I've heard nearly zero mention anywhere of anyone seeing this film. Matt Damon is very good in it and somehow Adam Driver is imo serviceable/ok and Ben Affleck seems a bit out of place in this one.

It's a must for anyone who likes Ridley Scott films or that kind of genre.

Oh wow, yes that makes sense. I've always wondered why nobody ever talks about this movie anywhere.
Released during the pandemic. Ok makes sense.
