Here is my assessment of A Haunting in Venice.
It's not the film I thought it was going to be. I was prepared for a fun, but somewhat over the top Venetian Gothic horror fest. Branagh cleverly guides us down that path initially, with his atmospheric shots of nocturnal Venice and some familiar jaunty angles in the style of The Third Man. I won't give anything away but the tone of the film changes and it becomes a different film to the one I thought I would see.
Branagh was at pains to make a very different film to the previous instalment. Out went the technicolour glamour and questionable VFX, instead of relying on larger than life performances from big names, the cast here are assembled for their abilities. And I'll tell you what, nobody does better than 13 year old Jude Hill who somehow manages to bring some real depth to his character, which is quite moving at times given his character's motivation.
It's an excellent film which entertained and sometimes evoked real pathos. And the cinematography is exceptional, I found so much to admire in the detail of the lighting. The best of the trilogy by some distance.

That's a really good review Jules, Mark Kermode watch out . . . I really enjoy reading your reviews, especially your Classical Concert reviews, you may have missed a true calling! The best of the trilogy by some distance. Seems aligned with other opinions that's it's definitely the best of the three he's done so far.

The reviews I saw were very mixed so I didn't really know what to expect. At the end of the day, it's Agatha Christie, so certain plot conventions are a given, but that's part of the old school charm for me.

Lol, thanks Tim. The reviews I saw were very mixed so I didn't really know what to expect. At the end of the day, it's Agatha Christie, so certain plot conventions are a given, but that's part of the old school charm for me. That's what I love about Christie's books, the old world charm. Yes they're not what you'd call cutting edge writing, or particularly thought provoking when it comes to plot, but they're entertaining and I can read one in normally a day, or two at the most. So a light interlude between a heavy non-fiction read. I tend to do 2 non-fiction, then a fiction to lighten the load. I love her use of language from that day . . "I say, steady on old boy" and such like.
But I'm happy with the books rather than Branagh's interpretations.

I saw that trailer the other night before Sir Kenneth B's film - I must confess that Talking Heads are just one of those bands I "don't get", in fact I find them a minor irritant LOL.

Can't argue with that, never bought any of their music, but I neither like or dislike them, just never explored them so they've always been off my radar - indifferent I suppose is the word. However, this films looks really good so I'm going
Ha, I just checked and I haven't played any Talking Heads since joining Last.fm in April 2012 . . . probably never played them in that case, other than hearing them on the radio.

Off to see The Creator today, the new Gareth Edwards film . . . looking forward it.
Got a busy few days ahead, Old Oak and Stop Making Sense tomorrow, then Saturday and Sunday the Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival 2023 in Cardiff with 5 films booked and Monday it's A Little Life and RMN.
10 films in 5 days - a bit like a julesd68 classical music marathon!

I've been studiously avoiding reviews of The Creator because most of them seem to be a bit over-the-top. I'll be interested, though, in your thoughts, Tim. Well I thought it was really good Slinger, you can definitely recognise Gareth Edwards style now, although I've only seen 3 of his 4 films - this has that authentic Monsters vibe to it. He has a great way of telling a story and this is an original story that's also very relevant. It's reminiscent of Nolan and Villeneuve at times, with a few Nolan style time flips. A big epic blockbuster Sci-Fi adventure that (for me) makes a Marvel film look like the utter trash they are.
Great score from Hans Zimmer with some other cool retro music additions that I won't name as I'm going to keep the spoiler level low. Gorgeously filmed and most of it was shot on location around Asia and a real surprise for me, was one of my favourite musicians has a larger role than his normal cameo parts and I didn't know he was in it! The two central characters though are superb . . . so if you liked Rogue One and you like films like Blade Runner, this is definitely going to appeal. Allison Janney deserves a mention too, she nailed her part which was very different to anything else I've seen her in.
I shall be seeing it again
