Huge scale, effortless, easy on the ear, immense bass. The perfect system for me.

Huge scale, effortless, easy on the ear, immense bass. The perfect system for me. I could live with it... Need more pennies, though.

I'm as close as I will ever get, but very happy with it.

I'm as close as I will ever get, but very happy with it. TBH I think the horns look like shit - seriously ugly. That bothers me a bit. Also, running 20 large triodes is serious heat generation. Not good in the summer. You'd need good aircon to counteract it. The list of snags and gotchas is huge, really, the more you think about it.

I wasn't really commenting on that system. With all those horns and valves, it's not for me, either.
I was commenting on the attributes "huge scale, effortless, easy on the ear, immense bass". Exactly what I look for in a system.

I know. I was just saying, Martin.
I think they look better in the flesh than the photograph, but they are still a bit of an eyeful.
That said, for those who can afford to cope with all the cost and practical issues and don't mind the looks, it's a great system.

Maintenance-wise, that many valves all going off at a different rate would drive me absolutely spare!

Having used 211s for many years and owning a large collection of them plus the ability to test them with my tester, they are incredibly reliable. Well, at least the NOS ones are, and with thoriated tungsten (radioactive) filaments they are designed to last a very, very long time. Nearly all mine come in at the same measured value despite the manufacturer and degree of use e.g. GE, RCA, Amperex etc.
Each one of those Aurora's takes one 211 and 3 845s. NOS 845s from the best manufacturers are hard to source and cost a lot more than 211s.
As a rich dude I would employ someone to get me the best 845s available. Either 20 Amperex or 20 United Electronics. The poor chap would have his work cut out trying to find such a set.

Just realised the Viva amps on the tables have 5 triodes of 211 or 845 type and the ones on the floor seem to be Aurora's. The ones on the tables aren't on their website.
18 in all, then. For the sake of accuracy.

211s back in and ruling the pack. I have had these packed for the last 2.5 years ready to sell. Can't do it. They are ridiculous and most definitely off the normal scale. They so remind me of the recent Viva system sound at AudioHanoi that in turn made me remember how different large triodes sound in comparison to any tranny amp. What is weird though is I thought these mofos were clipping and humming beyond belief last time I was listening to them. But for the last three days they have just been sounding amazing. Even at high subjective volume without any apparent issues.

Need some decent 4m RCA cables. Preferably cheap and sold by Maplin LOL.

You don't need much lighting in the room with those 211s glowing.

A problem in the much smaller previous location was the heat emission during the hot summer months.
Here, not really due to three huge closed loop control programmable Velux windows and the much larger room.
Just ordered an electronic drum kit for fun. Played an expensive Rowland setup before deciding on something much cheaper. Decided Rowland are taking the piss. I hope my thoughts are proven by the risk of not having the opportunity to play the ones I decided to buy.
If I am wrong it's not a problem as more money on things you like is always money well spent;)

It occurs to me I was probably overloading a mains regen last time I used the 211s here.
Whatever. No issues now, direct to wall here works better.

Never come across AlysVox. Easy to drive, or Apogee level short circuit?

Efficiency is supposed to be good with stronger magnets (neodymium) i.e. fine with lower powered valve amps.
TBH though they cost a lot more. And they are harder to work with. Power is cheaper than the additional cost of the magnets for those building planar magnetics as a hobby. And for some reason all neo planars seem to chicken out and use high power solid state at shows.
Go figure.
