Thanks John, look good. Have been talking to Vic, considering building a copy of his scaffold for a pair of UM 18 per side, these could then sit behind a minimalist baffle for the other Bastanis drivers.

Sounds a good idea Ali If you go for it I hope you share the build and what it sounds like

Just to clarify my thoughts on the UM18 if you into deep electronic bass like Kraftwork the driver will make total sense of this the same way Martins Ushers do with this type of music. If like me most of your music taste does not really go that low I would consider another bass driver like the 390 or 385 I will stick to my Neos as I do not need the extra low-level detail.

Yes Vic said the same. I’ve been a bit spoilt with the Impulse H2’s though, they do a decent room filling bass, so I’d like similar from the OB’s. I watch a lot of films through the system as well, decent bass is good with that too.
I’m starting to get them dialled in now, getting some good bass from the 18” Goldwoods.

I use the 390s, I borrowed the 385s for a while. I don't believe my room would do justice to the UM 18s. Vic has a nice proportioned room whereas mine has some challenges. I found the 390s a little or a bit more than a little better than 385s. So much depends on the room and how far dsp can help.

The Goodwoods are good bass drivers It might be worth trying it with those first If you need that bottom octave you can move to the Um18

I had Martin over today I will write more about it on my system blog later. It a shame this approach is too radical for about 99.9999% of people, as it overs incredible performance at very reasonable costs.

It certainly is radical, but it also certainly works. Clearly there is cancellation at deep frequencies, but the upper bass punch is impressive as there is nothing at all resisting the cone's movements.
They do look industrial as in your opening post, John, but there is a certain 'form follows function' about them.
Do you ever plan to go with 18" drivers?

I doubt it The UM18 do go down incredibly low, but I only have a few tracks I would need them on.

I think the Neos are not really designed to go low Open air you get more detail and texture but lose a bit of the lower bass I tend to prefer hearing into the bass notes Better bass drivers will give me more but I worry they over power the room Also costs are a limiting factor as also would need 2 inukes

Just to clarify the bass drivers are wired out of phase with each other as both are facing each other. So when sound is pushing backwards both speakers are pushing back towards the wall and the same forwards towards the listener My friend tried the bass drivers in the same direction but preferred them facing each other and I trust his ears

How did it go or have you got into other projects Ali Hi John, not done anything as yet, am enjoying the Bastanis as they are tbh. I will get round to it sometime. Four UM18 are a lot of money for a punt though, might see if I can arrange a trip to Vic’s first.

Yes I think good to visit Vic if you are seriously interested. The scale he gets is a few steps beyond my system
Vic a great hoist

Thanks for an interesting thread John. I have been casually interested in open baffle for a while and only recently gathered enough knowledge to know what it is about and be able to talk about it. They are unacceptable to a lot of people because of aesthetics but could people not make a frame which would support speaker grille cloth or such like and hide them that way ? I had a brief go at OB (kind of) with my bass cubes and like you John they were in isobaric configuration.I was researching a Boffle type of enclosure at the time. All i did was remove the back panel from my 50cm cubes and put an old quilt over the back. Well i was startled by some of the qualities it possessed even in such a crude experiment. There were details and textures in bass guitar i never knew existed (Herbie Hancock secrets comes to mind). I did not think there was a lack of low bass at the time and it was rather captivating if a bit "wooly" sounding. I never progressed any further but did get a hint of what was available. I did not have my speakers that far from the wall which was not optimal. That is one thing that puts me off open baffle. Most things i read on the internet say you need four to five feet behind the speakers for the dipole effect to really work. That would not be acceptable in my listening room at home (i dabble with my speakers at work) which also doubles as the living room. It is such a shame really as i liked what i heard when removing the back panel from my bass cabs. Regards, Stu
