For me, Who Else! and You Had it Coming are creative peaks, but I really like parts of Emotion & Commotion and Loud Hailer, too.

Jeff has a very individual style of playing. He uses the tremolo arm like few other players do to achieve his signature sound.

I love how he makes the guitar sing like no other.

I don’t know what it is or why, but I find Jeff Beck just OK at best and I don’t find any of the stuff I’ve heard to have much musical quality.
Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop is one album I have, and it has a couple of good tracks, but that’s about it.

Beckology is a good intro into a long career, up to 1991 CD 1 is very early career and quality is adequate. Good music. Most of CDs 2 and 3 can be found on other albums. Much information in the booklet that comes with the set. Good eyesight required as tiny text. If you are a completionist or a heavy duty JB fan then you have to have it

Truth and Beck-Ola with a supergroup in the making JB, Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood bass, Nicky Hopkins piano. Micky Most producing and making a mess of it IMO. Both albums should be so good and yet neither fulfil the potential
I give Truth 6/10 and Beck-Ola 7/10

I suppose, other than Beck's Bolero this is Jeff's signature track, Cause We've Ended As Lovers. Watch how "busy" his right hand is. He's not only picking the strings with it, but he's controlling the tremolo arm, and the volume control to get the "violining" effect, all at the same time. The other bloke's not bad either.

So for me, the way I watch that video, Jeff Beck was good, but then Clapton blew him away.

Quite the opposite for me: Beck did extraordinary things, Clapton just did ordinary guitar heroics.

Beck is incredible. He literally makes his instrunent speak. As far as I am concerned, on the evidence of that video, Beck is Shakespeare, while Clapton is Reader's Digest!

Bit too in your face style He has a variety of styles that is merely one I would not be a fan if he only did albums in the style of Truth and Beck-Ola, the first two. There are some essential albums coming up Watch this space !

Some history I should have put in the first post.
Beck and Jimmy Page were mates from their teens Clapton, Beck and Page were all in the Yardbirds. Beck left them and Page was holding the reins. Was going to be The New Yardbirds, until Eric came up with Led Zeppelin as a comment on how it would go. Not quite right Eric.
We saw JB at the Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival 1967. Thought they were ok. Rod on vocals said at one point "and now over to the guvnor" or similar and JB sang Hi Ho Silver Lining. All of us were staggered. Awful. Micky Most insisted JB do the vocals. He didn't rate the rest of the band at all. Made a few bob as a single as did Love is blue - not for us. We put JB to one side for some years before discovering he actually was pretty good

I'll take both please. Exactly what I said many years ago to Hendrix or Clapton ?

I like Clapton's style and his singing voice.
Beck is a master guitarist (in the manner of Gilmour: no heroics, just makes his guitar sing).
There is room for both in this world!

I think it was Keith Moon who made the comment about lead balloons, Mike.

I think it was Keith Moon who made the comment about lead balloons, Mike. Could be Chris. I read it very many years ago. My guess is a journo mistake. Could be me tho'
