In the scenario suggested, I'd simply downgrade to a half-decent mini system and enjoy listening to music on that, whilst keeping the car. Since you set the goal posts...
My love of listening to music means I would simply downgrade my car to something that works (a cheap runabout) and keep my system and collection, should my finances ever become tight. I am not above taking trains (in fact, I have just returned from Brussels by Eurostar and it is by far the best way to travel there or to Paris) and, regardless, my system is my first priority.

If in reality, if you're more into hi-fi than music, then why not just say so and be done with it? Since the one is useless without the other, your distinction makes no sense - they are a symbiotic partnership (and yes I'm excluding crap playback). Point me to one member here who loves their hi-fi and dislikes music?

Hi Martin, I'm not above taking trains either. I simply dislike not being the one in control of when I want to go somewhere, and the inconvenience associated with lugging suitcases around train stations, etc, unless I have no other option. YMMV. Del's the same. We also don't like being stuck in the one place for the duration of our holiday. For example, it's not unknown for us to make a 150 mile round trip in the evening, from our hotel base, to go to a particular restaurant for dinner - and I'm talking about somewhere in the middle of nowhere, MILES from any bus or train routes! Trains can be cool, though. I love the old ones from my childhood, during the 1970s, where you travelled in individual compartments, all closed with sliding doors, and where there were brass lamps above each (big comfy) seat, illuminated via a pulling cord. For our 25th wedding anniversary, I'll be surprising Del with a trip on the Orient Express Marco.

Point me to one member here who loves their hi-fi and dislikes music? That's not what I was saying. My point was that, in my opinion, some people (not necessarily members of this forum) are kidding themselves on as how much of a music lover they actually are. I stand by that view, as I have good reasons for holding it. Marco.

That is their business though surely, they shouldn't have to sit in fear of being judged. We've been here many, many times before and it got old when old was really old It doesn't matter a damn HOW people enjoy their music, as long as they do. Surely that is far more important than reading what a bunch of old crocks like us think...

Dave, I was simply expressing an opinion, no more no less. I've said my piece now, as far as that matter is concerned.

Nah it's fine Marco, it just seemed a tad ridiculous in the context of yours truly sitting here listening to music on a system which literally cost a few quid, and I'm having such a ball shimmying about to Manfred Mann... (perish the thought)

I've said my piece now, as far as that matter is concerned. You may have said your piece, but others here have the distinct impression that you ARE being judgemental. Your posts suggest exactly that.
We at TAS do not judge members on the size of their system or their collection. In fact, it is enshrined in our forum rule 6.

It's never a good idea to try to read people's minds; to try to guess what they 'really' mean when (for example) they say they're a music lover. They may be lying, or being disingenuous, or joking, but there's no way of knowing, so it's best to take them at their word. As the Good Book says 'Judge not, lest ye be judged and found wanting'.
PS I don't know of anyone who fits the cliche'd audiophile description of a multi-thousand pound system and a handful of recordings, but I know several people with tens of thousands of recordings and systems that cost less than a grand. They seem to enjoy their music regardless.

I'm puzzled by the whole "if you've got more invested in your system than music, you love the hifi more" statement. I started out by having significantly more invested in my music than "system" (first was a Sony walkman with enhanced bass headphones lol). Now I have a collection that is varied and I'm still exploring it. As my knowledge and means to acquire have increased, I've made changes accordingly to the system to increase enjoyment. SO, the ratios have changed substantially and ( truth is I'd have bought a hell of a lot more music if I could find newer stuff I liked) I argue I'm still the same music lover I've always been, I've just got better means to enjoy it
