I like new cars Mike, having said that my current car is the first new car I have ever owned, but I doubt I would buy a secondhand one again. Mind you I tend to hang on to them (5 years for this one) so the instant depreciation is not such an issue I had plenty of new cars provided by the companies I worked for. When I started my own company I bought new 3 times. Then I finally noticed what I lost in depreciation and saw what bargains there were 2nd hand. Bear in my this is my company so effectively my money. Last one I bought was my Saab, 1996, about 10 years ago. Has a few problems to be sorted but way cheaper to sort than buy new Try to buy hifi 2nd hand too, but bite the bullet sometimes when I hear something really good. I did buy a brand new bike though Tax relief on that is very nice

The concept of choosing between one's car and hi-fi is an intriguing one. For me, much as I love my system, there's no way on this earth I'd swap it for my car! Therefore, if I were forced to choose between one or the other, then the hi-fi would lose royally... I guess much depends on a) how much you love driving (and the experience you derive from that with the car you own) and b) how much of an integral part of your lifestyle is occupied by your car. If we didn't have a car, that would effectively put paid to our holidays abroad in Europe. When on holiday, we love the convenience of having a car, meaning that we can tour around and not be tied to one place (freedom, effectively) - and most importantly, bring lots of goodies back (such as superb food and wine) to enjoy at home! That is precisely why we never fly abroad to Europe. Planes only get involved when our holiday destination can't be reached practically by car - and even then we'd do a 'fly/drive' and simply hire a car at the airport. In the scenario suggested, I'd simply downgrade to a half-decent mini system and enjoy listening to music on that, whilst keeping the car. Now, if you were to ask me to choose between my music collection and my car, then it'd be the car that would lose royally! Quite simply, my love of music and foreign travel considerably outweighs my love of hi-fi – and my love of music outweighs my love of almost anything else in life (my wife, family, friends and cats aside). Marco. Gasp Almost the exact opposite here. Prefer the bike anyway

Lol - c'est la vie...We're all different, Mikey! Besides, I don't think Del and I could get to Italy on a bike. Perhaps a tandem? But then where would we put all those cases of Claret.... I would ask you though, what do you love most: your hi-fi system or your music collection? Marco.

Ride to work is one if you are an employee of the company If you are a Director you just buy it on the company Vat - off Tax Relief on the rest I got a £1500+ bike, last season so nearly 30% off anyway, down to £1100 Less the Vat £916 ish Less the tax relief, fill in your own My accountant put me onto it when I asked about Ride to work, and he is straight BTW !

That decision would certainly soon reveal and separate the REAL music lovers from those that are kidding themselves on, and who in reality care rather more for the boxes and wires they use (or measuring equipment), than the music! Marco.

This is a bit of a silly argument really. Clearly someone whose priority was music rather than hifi would spend more of their money on music (live or recorded) than on expensive boxes to play it on, and they wouldn't spend lots of time on forums dedicated to discussing those boxes. Plus these days there's a huge amount of music available that doesn't require a physical collection of records or CDs, so it's possible to be a 'REAL music lover' without any 'collection' at all.

I am baffled by this desire to pigeon hole , separate and sort . People have different priorities vis-à-vis cars. hifi and music - End off .

Not at all. One can still enjoy posting on forums about hi-fi and music, but ultimately in terms of importance, prioritise one more than the other. I guess that the true gauge of whether you're more of a music lover than a hi-fi buff is whether your music collection is worth more than your system, or vice versa.... Trouble is, that thinking goes tits up if you've got a file-based audio system, with so many gigabytes of stored music that's cost you fook all. Marco.

I am not sure how you can measure a person emotional enjoyment of music its a personal experience I like to think I have a decent HIFI because I love music I probably been to about 3 to 4 thousand concerts mostly small clubs like the Marquee so that does that make me more into music, its for others to judge

My "ride to work" consists of going from one room upstairs to another downstairs... The 'rush-hour traffic' is a b*stard, though, if the cats get in the way!! Marco.
