Did you check all the coverage maps in the link I gave you? There might be a better service (although none as good as Three for data).

Sure did
EE worst, Three next
Neighbour uses the best two, Vodaphone and 02 and they are bad. Don't know how many bars he gets
When I went upstairs I opened the Velux window and stuck the phone out - to make no difference

Blimey, in an area like yours? Why haven't you found someone influential to get a mast put up somewhere close?

Stunning news from next door
"tested my Three system. The best is about 28 download and 16 upload... 18 download and 0.8 upload with my Openreach connection... I will look into the best external antenna"
Looks like a done deal to me Now to work on why my connection is so poor. Have tweaks from Three to try

In our case, putting the Three router by the window gives us 5 bars.

Aren't you surrounded by trees ?

Yes. It works really well, that model Huawei 4G router has a great rep for pulling the signal in.

Right, now I'm puzzled
1. You list a TP link router
2. Why would a router make a mobile signal better ?

No, you're getting confused Mike.
TP-Link 4G router with BT SIM card in the Music Room for streaming music.
Huawei 4G router with Three SIM card in the main house, connected to 5 BT WholeHome mesh discs, for streaming TV and general internet.

Thought you had Plusnet for broadband on contract.
How can a router get a better signal ?

Thought you had Plusnet for broadband on contract. How can a router get a better signal ? We were, but Plusnet is shit speed. I've kept it going for another year because of the landline phone that Ruth doesn't want to lose just now. If Three goes down (they were doing mast maintenance a month ago), I just plug the BT WholeHome discs into the Plusnet router temporarily. It's a nice failover. A router has more space inside for a decent aerial, as opposed to tightly packed phone innards.

The Three was your third internet sub then ! Do mobile masts go down often ? Will you keep the landline for a back up ? Sounds like the aerial in the router is the reason for next door's surprising speed then

Yes, but they're all quite cheap so I'm not going to lose sleep over it, knowing that we'll get rid of Plusnet eventually and be down to two services. I'm not a cheapskate!
The failover has had a very real benefit for when we've both been working from home during the pandemic. We couldn't be without internet. There are further failovers by using our mobile phones in tethered mode.

At over 500gb usage per month, I think I'll stick to landline 🤣

We're averaging 459GB/mo. Three has no data cap.

MartinT take a bow Next door experimented with a Three SIM and box £17/month for mobile broadband ... also installed an aerial. Interestingly we have 2 local aerials –......carried out a simple aerial test and found the one Southwest, although further away, gave a more reliable signal. I guess we are relatively higher up. Long story short, but we have now installed the aerial and get 50Mbps Download and 18Mbps Upload. Thank you again for your advice re the mobile broadband option. - this was from you sunshine Guess what we are doing ?
