MartinT take a bow Next door experimented with a Three SIM and box £17/month for mobile broadband ... also installed an aerial. Interestingly we have 2 local aerials –......carried out a simple aerial test and found the one Southwest, although further away, gave a more reliable signal. I guess we are relatively higher up. Long story short, but we have now installed the aerial and get 50Mbps Download and 18Mbps Upload. Thank you again for your advice re the mobile broadband option. - this was from you sunshine Guess what we are doing ? Working out how to steal your neighbour's broadband? He's done all the work for me to get one. I'm relatively happy with what we have. However this appears to be far better, less dough and in a few months time if all is still working as it should, just right for me !

The kit he has was a few bob
4G Huawei B535 Router Extender & a Ubiquiti Access point for wifi Solwise 20" pole and wall mount Poynting CAB low loss extension cable Poynting XPOL2 Antenna
Losing my landline looks more likely now

The Poynting antennae have a great rep. If I needed an external one, that's what I would use.
The Huawei B535 does its bit by being an excellent router.
We have 5 BT WholeHome mesh wi-fi access points running off it. We never have any trouble streaming Netflix, Prime or NowTV any more. I watched the whole F1 race today without a single glitch.

What do you think about Huawei, possibilities of being hacked or other ?

I doubt there would be any kind of back door in Huawei routers with the millions they've sold to date. They don't want to risk being blacklisted by every western country in the world.

Why the big deal about Huawei then ? They have already been stopped from supplying certain items

They supply big telephone switching and routing systems. There is distrust of any big Chinese company (and they are huge now) supplying such kit to the west, with fears of spying on our communications.
Whether it's just a big anti-Chinese campaign or there is any truth in it is unproven.
As for domestic routers, life is too short to worry about such things.

My decision time approaches
Another alternative is Mifi !? Don't understand it even after reading up on it Who knows what advantages it might offer ?

Mifi is just a mobile dongle. Kind of an inexpensive router. I can't see it being as good as the Huawei router, which pulls in a fantastic signal.

Thanks One less decision to make ! Need to work out what happens to my bills if I ditch Plusnet and the landline and start using my mobile only The boss currently pays £15 a month already to Apple whatever I do now or in the future. Have to work out the infrequent callers on the landline to let them know the number is going/gone

I think Three have been upgrading their local mast recently. After a period of variable rates and some downtime, today my Speedtest shows 90.5Mbps download and 8.1Mbps upload speed. That's a new high for us and will do nicely.

In 5 years time or less there won't be any choice for landline calls as BT is doing away with them.

Indeed, we'll be chucking Plusnet and the phone when the contract expires next year

The Three service is by its nature not as steady in performance as landline-based broadband. However, we get a steady 60Mbps, peaking up to 90 on occasions, and I've been running it for long enough that we know we can rely on it. In the worst case, we can tether a phone which runs from a different service. Both of our desktop PCs use wi-fi so it's no trouble. I'm within the Plusnet cancellation timeframe for contract expiry so I'm going to cancel the landline and broadband service. www.speedtest.net/my-result/d/e5966771-4449-4235-b1da-9435ec03f0ad

Many will go the same route
Seems to be a secret to most Amazes me that Martin Lewis, Moneytips doesn't plug mobile broadband Mind you he says almost nothing about draught proofing

I've done it. Plusnet are gone on 23-Feb.
They asked the usual question of why they are losing me, but as soon as I explained that they couldn't give me the service performance I need they stopped trying. They know it's out of their hands.

Same here. Told them what next door was getting and how much cheaper Max we were ever going to get was 15Mbps download and often far less
Plusnet are one of the best. Maybe they will cotton on and do mobile broadband

Being part of BT, Plusnet do cheap SIM deals on the EE network, but they can't compete with Three who have cornered the market in unlimited data.
