Blimey - what's your signal strength? I would guess 1-2 bars.

By comparison, the BT/EE router in the music room is getting only 22ms ping but a slower 22M download speed. Perfectly adequate for streaming, of course.
If the external 4G antenna I have on order for the Huawei is successful in improving signal strength, I'll buy another one for the TP-Link.

Tried Three again on my phone and it gave me a blistering 6mb ...

What antenna did you go with Martin and how much gain does it have?

The antenna was crap to be honest, Simon. I just wanted to see what a 4G Chinese one could do to boost the signal and the result is that both the Huawei and TP-Link do it better with their own ones (the Huawei is internal, configurable for external, the TP-Link uses 'rabbit ear' external ones).
In both cases, the external antenna gave about 2dB lower signal strength. It'll go in the bin.
Unless I go with a professional solution like the company you pointed me towards, I'll leave it be. Both are performing well.

Neighbour wants us to club together to get Open Reach to do us a Community Fibre Partnership I guessed big numbers. Seems to be so from here www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/threads/community-fibre-partnership-estimated-costs.36518/We might have 10 houses so a load of dough Doesn't look sensible to me so how about Mobile Broadband in the future if not now ? My Three signal is hopeless and everyone who comes here has problems connecting with their mobile How come MartinT has such a good signal when he is also down a country lane ? As 4 and 5G roll out is mobile likely to gain good coverage everywhere ? Will phone lines with broadband on top go the way of so much old tech ?

We're lucky with Three and BT, both give us 4-5 bars.
Your best bet is to evaluate all the services for signal strength. Anything with 3 or fewer bars will be too unreliable.
What is the community cost per household? It might be reasonable to proceed with fibre.

How come you get that strength where you are and we get almost nothing ?
Think the only one we haven't tried is EE
Costs bandied around on that link £150,000 - £250,000 per setup. Wait 3 months for Openreach to work it out High £100s or a few thousand per property. Dealing with Openreach was "opaque"
Is mobile likely to improve ?

Have you checked coverage here: www.4g.co.uk/coverage/There are a couple of mobile masts not too far away, both near the M3. I guess that's the secret. By improve, you mean more masts? Possibly, although they are more likely to convert the current ones to 5G first.

Thanks, useful Started finding how many networks and best coverage here Signalchecker.co.uk That tells me there are 4 networks Three 02 EE Vodaphone EE looks bad for indoors, Three a bit better Neighbour says "We have O2 and Vodafone mobiles and neither can consistently provide 4G" Damn Improve er, somehow. Hadn't thought how, so probably more masts ! Better mains cables ? Working........

You can have a mobile 4G/5G antenna mounted on the roof. You would need a company who knows what they're doing and have the signal testing kit. If Three are reasonable now, they could possibly get you 5 bars with a decent antenna. The provided Huawei router is very good and supports external antennae. Three also have no data cap

Ahaha ! Thanks Martin
More I didn't know
Three is currently rubbish from previous test on ground floor but I will try on the upper floor ceiling. I'll also try standing on a chair and sticking the phone out of the Velux !

Looking around I find one pro company that looks like they will be £100s or more and not many others Amazon have a raft of 4/5G antennas too
My aerial guy says it is illegal and he won't do it. Shame as he's good

Illegal?

He was quite Adam Ant
He is aware of all the kit being sold and installed. Apparently it is in the Offcom rules. I think he must mean to use for broadcasting but maybe this counts as broadcasting. Shame as he is my choice to this sort of kit

It must be for broadcasting voice? Not for data. I don't believe that an aerial for a data router is illegal.
Wouldn't stop me putting one up, anyway.

Took my LG phone with Three SIM upstairs yesterday. Converted loft, 2 floors up
Signal strength stayed the same one bar
Would an aerial be much better for me or next door neighbour ?

I fear that one bar will never convert to something usable, Mike.
