Needless to say, my installation (without Spotify) updated perfectly. I might give up and use the simpler supplied Spotify plug-in for now. I find I only use the Spotify interface anyway, unless I'm playing a rare file.

I know you've asked about it on the Volumio forum, but have you contacted anyone concerned with the volspot-thingumy plug-in itself?

Balbuze? He's on the Volumio forum but didn't address that specific issue.

Where does this leave non techies ? It's undoubtedly because I'm using the volspotconnect plug-in by Balbuze. However, it's annoying as it causes a fundamental SNAFU in the OS that can only be resolved by re-burning the SD card. Don't worry, as you were. Volumio damage done for me. So much easier to play a CD

Damage? I use it all the time.
Haven't fired up the CD player in about three weeks now.

Credibility
My expectation is of updating or doing anything to Volumio or Pi and finding it broken.
Then into the -just do this not working -try that then, - reboot - reinstall - other not working each time. I'm not competent enough, lack the will power and hate the fiddling.
With a pile of CDs never heard on the system I'm spoilt for choice. When/if the technology is solid enough (for me) and my pile of CDs is much lower I'll be there.

Balbuze? He's on the Volumio forum but didn't address that specific issue. Ah, right. I remember you saying you'd raised it with Michelangelo, I didn't know if you'd messaged 'Balbuze' personally. I alternate between CD and Volumio, mostly because I've got a (big) box of unplayed CDs.

Burning the SD card now. Will have it up and running on the standard Spotify Connect plug-in, should have music in 20 mins

It was 15 mins. Blowed if the new Spotify Connect included with Volumio build 2.444 doesn't do album artwork and progress now, so no more need for the manual plug-in installation. Getting a build setup, reading my library and running Spotify takes less than 10 mins now. Sounds great with both files and Spotty.

That's where I don't want to go. Is there an idiot guide to burning that is guaranteed to work ? How does it sound compared to the Ayre ? What are the pluses to a CD ?

The only reason I had problems is that I went off piste. I documented it well enough. No-one following the standard settings has had any issues and now there is no reason to do what I did any more.
All the idiots guides are in the build threads.
It sounds superb, utterly compelling on hi-res files and very good indeed on red book files and Spotify.
Pluses? Immediate access to several million songs and growing all the time. No need to get up. Links to similar songs and artists.

Thought it was the update itself.
How does it compare to the Ayre on sound quality ?

I'd like to compare CPU/RAM settings with others. These are mine currently - I matched the GPU frequency with Core to prevent beating and pushed the under-voltages a little more.
arm_freq=800 sdram_freq=400 core_freq=400 gpu_freq=400 over_voltage=-3 over_voltage_sdram=-3 Also, wi-fi is turned off in Volumio and upsampling (for red book files) is set to 24/88.2 very high quality.

I think I published this somewhere here already, but this is my config.txt...
My resampling settings are...
My Wireless Networking is set to Off.

arm_freq=666 sdram_freq=333 core_freq=400 gpu_freq=333 over_voltage=-10 over_voltage_sdram=-4 Thanks, Paul. You're running a very slow ARM and SDRAM clock and also undervolting more. Any stability problems? I'm going to try these settings. Fascinating. What do these settings achieve?

Good if you can disable the HDMI setting

I've never done it John but I shall add that in tonight, together with the lower clock/voltage settings.
