You a lefty then Slinger? I don't see what my political leanings have to do with anything, Tim. Yup, left handed. Good spot.

I've been thinking about this thread and the fact I soon have to go through another dreaded move, meaning a system overhaul and the addition of a turntable (only have a stop-gap right now). It's my intention that this move will be my final one, together with the last Hi-Fi I ever buy - it's stressing me out just thinking about it TBH!
Anyhoots, I reckon if I had my first ever system again in as new/fully working order and I added a decent DAC/file server to it, I could be happy.

You could do much worse, Tim. Have you thought about a serious all-in-one network player like the Pioneer NA-70AE, which is an upgrade from the one we have in our kitchen. I'm impressed with how well they work.

I have considered those Martin, the Pioneer and Cambridge ones in particular. The reason I dismissed them are the apps are very clunky compared to JRemote for JRiver (I love JRiver), Last.fm scrobbling, cost and longevity. With my own server/DAC I believe I can get as good a sound for less money with the added benefit that I can fix it myself and if needs be, upgrade the DAC.
File based digital audio has grown exponentially since I first became interested in it, DAC's and players especially. A DAC is the only component I wouldn't necessarily feel tied to forever and could possibly consider changing. Speakers, amplifier and turntable however, when they are all sorted will be staying put for good.
Heresy I know, but I want tone controls and the Yamaha amp I have my eye on isn't too dissimilar to my very first amp and Harbeth aren't a million miles away sound wise to Jim Rogers 149's - how funny is that? Almost full circle in many ways, certainly for the main system.

Like everything in life, it's down to perception and how you frame it. Now if I could only do the same thing with my perception of computers!

I love moves I used to love moving, but after 36 times I think I'm done. I can choose anywhere in the country Mike, which actually is a double edged sword, too much choice. I'm 99% sure it'll be Suffolk or Norfolk though. I'd love to live in Yorkshire or Scotland, but both are too far from friends and London.

The boss wants to go around there and some of the prices are stunningly low compared to round here. She rates Suffolk and Norfolk too. Flat isn't it ? The Zoopla heat map of prices can help

The other half of that equation are friends, they all pretty much all live in Suffolk - who do I know in Edinburgh?

We're out south of Basingstoke and are already far away from Ruth's friends (Wokingham and London) and my friends (Luton). It doesn't really stop our seeing them but it's less frequent than it used to be.

The little Class D in the cheapo Chinese system is gone. I really liked its sound for the small stuff, but throw a decent sized orchestra at it and it sounded like it was trying to crawl back inside itself; it seemed to become completely two-dimensional. I kept the valve pre and the DAC in place but replaced the Topping amp with my old Arcam A75 and the improvement was noticeable immediately. Yes. I know. Arcam. I've owned quite a bit of Arcam gear and always found it workmanlike and predictable, in a good way. I'm sorry I ever sold my Alpha 9 CD player. Of course, it does leave a 'vacancy' in the amp department for some time in the future, so it's not all bad news, well, only for my bank balance, eventually.

Paul, you know what I'm thinking for the best *cheap* modern power amp - NVA A20 for £200 and he's not putting the price up in April either! For new product there's little else unless you look to the crude cheap pro models that'll go for the throat methinks...
Tim, put me out of some of my misery and buy my Harbeths please? I can think of very many holes I can extricate myself from if you did...
Cheap system? Well, most of my current gear was either inherited or gifted to me, so you can't really get cheaper than that, but if starting again and knowing I'd need to do some service work on the turntables at least, I'd probably try for one of the simpler later idler Duals, such as a 1226 or 1228 (others are a bit old or far too expensive now) and fitted with something (hopefully) honest like a Goldring E3 which I believe is a step-up from the ubiquitous AT95E or Rega Carbon/AT91. Maybe I could look once again at a GL75 and keep it original but with a modern cartridge the arm is quite able to track (over-familiarity breeds disinterest in Lenco's and springy old Thorens though, but Duals always keep me smiling ), amp I'm not sure as there are so many, but oldish a A&R A60 or even older, a vintage Yamaha CA600 or similar (the more complex 800 and 1000 have dead sounding preamps only 'rescued' by the Class A amp setting), CD player could be a humble but so capable Denon 1015 (I have one here and it's a fine all-rounder as a complete beast and as a transport imo). Speakers I really don't know as all my 1970's favourites would need some work. I'm fond of KEF 104ab's which are now climbing in price along with the Concerto, which was a bargain not so long ago, but would like to try some AR6's or 2ax's, accepting the foam cone surrounds will have gone at least once in their lives and crossover caps will be marginal to say the least after all this time... Vintage JBL's call to me too, but there's so many crap models in the genuine classics and price-condition is totally confusing to me if costs are important.

I was sad to see the demise of the AP10PX. The extra input was a huge benefit for little money. I also thought it would have been very useful to add preamp outs and use the AP10PX as the basis for very neat bi-amp system,
When funds allowed, you could simply deploy the AP10PX as preamp and tweeter amp, whilst adding a bigger power amp or monoblocks for the bass units, That would give one hell of a cheap (and good) bi-amp system and provide an easy upgrade path for the user.
