I've often run 2nd systems and had great pleasure from them. It set me thinking about a cheap system I could really enjoy, if I wanted to maximise value. This is what I'd choose today.
Revolver turntable (sub £100 with a decent MM if you choose the right one) Creek 4040 (£50-60) Rega Planet (£150 ish) Rega Elas (£80 ish)
I would knock up my own speaker cables from H-07V installation cable (or pick up some cheap Linn K20) and interconnects from RG 316/u and I'd have a truly enjoyable two source system for under £400.
What price would an enjoyable system be for you and what would you hVe in it?

I have a low cost system in my kitchen diner. It performs admirably and is in no way lacking in the enjoyment department
Cambridge audio CD5 - richer sounds special from 20002 NVA super sound cord NVA AP20 integrated amplifier NVA LS2 speaker cable B&W CM1 2 way stand mounts - not cheap new but I was given them
The only thing I would change about this system is the speakers - diy semi Omni like NVA cubette

Semi omnis are great. I have no idea why there aren't loads of them being made. I made my own variation on Cubettes using the same cabinet and bass unit, better tweeter and cap and different damping for about £100. They ended up beating the originals which I sold on. You could always give it a go if you get bored. I hear you're not averse to a bit of DIY There's a thread on my build somewhere on TAS. Edit: Here's the thread.... theaudiostandard.net/thread/2052/diy-cube-shaped-speakersAnd since Photobucket robbed it of pics, here is a pic of them almost finished.

I was really surprised by and loved my second system whilst it was in use. I removed it as we decorated the office and must get back to putting it back in place at some point.
Amptastic Mini-T Amp (£100 ish) Wharfedale Diamond IV Speakers (£30 second hand) Apple Mac computer (bought to be used as a computer so hifi it just a bonus - i.e. cost irrelevant). Beresford Bushmaster II (£250 ish - bought for my primary system and kept when I upgraded for my second)

I have a second system, and a third as it happens but they dont get used..... The second one is quite nice, a samson servo 260 studio amp, tascam cd450 and some Nondescript Sony speakers. Does a nice job Pro gear especially amps seem to sit under the radar, no audiophool pretensions. If i were to put a new second system together i'd look that way as there are bargains to he had

The build quality of some pro amps is astonishingly good. I had one which I forget the name of, but it wasn't lacking in any way competed to a "hifi" amp.

I have always had at least one other system, usually using an old fm receiver, of which I have owned loads. I got rid of most of them a few years back though. The bedroom system is: Rasp Pi/Digi plus/ Beresford dac/ Yamaha CR 1020 /Acoustic Research AR2ax
In the kitchen, there is Pi / Mini T / modified Genexxa Pro LX5
However, I can enjoy music on played almost anything....except bagpipes.

Cheers for that Spica They look excellent. Did you put a Visaton tweeter in them ? They look like them from what I can see through the grilles. I don't know what tweeter RD used in the cubette. I love a bit of diy hifi but I had better get my main system finished first before working on the second system. Stu

I used the Vifa D27. RD recommended those to me a few years ago for some mk1 cubes I restored, I really liked them so I bought and used them again. The Cubettes used a cheap Chinese tweeter which was modified with doping and damping the face plate. Having the change to compare the Cubetts with the ones I built, I'd say the better tweeters were worth the extra cash. I bought a used pair and they only cost me £25 the pair.
The cleverest bit of the Cubette IMO was the re-purposing of the wooden box into a speaker cabinet. It's just the right size and looks fab. I use my speakers all the time with my Sonneteer amp and CD player.

If I had to pick an enjoyable budget headphone system it would be:
Rega Planet Schiit Magni Grado SR60i (although I'd change the standard pads for donut shaped ones)

However, I can enjoy music on played almost anything....except bagpipes. . . . and banjos! There's nowt wrong with bagpipes in general, it's the Scots Marching Pipes that make a godawful noise. They're instruments all right, but instruments of torture, not music. And banjos - have you never heard Bela Fleck? Ron Block?

And banjos - have you never heard Bela Fleck? Ron Block? Ah, that's not me Chris, I really love banjos and yes to Béla Fleck - outstanding musician. It's ChrisB who's a bit banjo shy

JRiver Media Server running on a fairly powerful PC (no real HiFi cost as I always have a good spec PC) (£25 for JRiver) Amptastic Mini-T amp (£50) HRT Streamer II+ DAC (£200) Celestion 5 speakers (£15 Gumtree) VanDamme Studio Blue speaker cable (£20) Mark Grant interconnects (£25)
About the same cost as three NASA, Quantum 'tunnel me to the centre of the earth' fuses 😊
Had that system running in my last UK flat dining room/office for over 3 years and loved it. Probably spent more time using that, than my £4k main system . . . go figure!
