Ah, that's not me Chris, I really love banjos and yes to Béla Fleck - outstanding musician. It's ChrisB who's a bit banjo shy I'm glad you cleared that up, Tim. I thought it was a bit of an odd one, with you liking all that Merican yeehaw stuff ...

Another bargain for the headphone lovers is the Myryad Z40. Peter Tyson is selling them for £94.

Yes! I think Paul ( Slinger ) has one. The Q5 is a brilliant little piece of kit. I've got one hooked up to the downstairs P.C. feeding an old pair of DL4 series 2s. I've also got a Topping TP22 two input amp downstairs with an SMSL Sanskrit 6TH DAC and an FX Audio valve pre/buffer into my ES11s (for the CD player and the Squeezebox Duet) and an SMSL SA36A with another SMSL Sanskrit 6TH DAC and a home-built valve buffer providing sound for the upstairs PC into a pair of KEF IQ 30s. That accounts (in no particular order) for what I suppose are my 2 nd, 3 rd, and 4 th systems.

Is there an easy or workable way of getting and RCA connections into the Q5 ?

Semi omnis are great. I have no idea why there aren't loads of them being made. I made my own variation on Cubettes using the same cabinet and bass unit, better tweeter and cap and different damping for about £100. They ended up beating the originals which I sold on. You could always give it a go if you get bored. I hear you're not averse to a bit of DIY There's a thread on my build somewhere on TAS. Edit: Here's the thread.... theaudiostandard.net/thread/2052/diy-cube-shaped-speakersAnd since Photobucket robbed it of pics, here is a pic of them almost finished. Good pic to add to the Loudspeaker photo challenge, Andrew

Is there an easy or workable way of getting and RCA connections into the Q5 ? There are USB, Optical, and Co-ax inputs for digital sources, e.g. your Pioneer CD. There is also an AUX input, although I haven't tested it, so an RCA to 3.5mm jack lead or converter should do the trick for your RCA in needs. Don't forget, it's also got an RCA out for a Subwoofer as well. You get a lot for a little, and I can vouch for the Subwoofer output. Another plus in my book is that the remote, although tiny, is aluminium, not cheap plastic. You can set bass, treble, and volume as well as selecting inputs etc. with the remote. It's also one less mains socket taken up as it replaces an amp and a separate DAC of course. All little things in themselves, but they add up.

Those little digital mini amps really do seem to work well with vintage Celestion speakers Paul. You can achieve a really great sound for very little money, ' £100 cheap as chips' systems - sounding far better than they really should IMO As long as I don't push my Mini-T too hard, it sounds really sweet.

The cheapest system I ever used on a long term basis was a little Pioneer 440 receiver and a big pair of AR speakers, which I used to use in my office.
The bits were won on 'collect only' Ebay sales. The receiver was 99p The speakers cost £5.50 (six quid actually, because I told the guy to keep the change!)
I used to listen to either the radio or CDs via my computer for hours on end every single day and I was very happy with it, never really needing any more sophistication in what I was hearing.

I think one of the reasons these second systems seem to sound so good is that we treat them much less critically. They're usually on to accompany whatever else we may be doing whereas "main" systems are judged by sitting quietly and enjoying music whilst excluding external stimuli as far as possible.

I agree. I often find that listening like that often allows me to find something I like in albums I might have initially found hard to get into on the main system.

When I finally peeled myself away from University, I was skint. I had got out of hifi around 1992/3 and sold all my bits. Starting again meant buying from boot sales and the local paper. I remember starting again with a Philips CD621 (£5) An Arcam Alpha amp (£6) and a pair of Monitor Audio 352s (£39). It was a really decent system. The amp was forgiving enough to let the CD player make music and the 352s always were great speakers. I could live with them any day. Some of my current musical favourites were found on that system.

I think one of the reasons these second systems seem to sound so good is that we treat them much less critically. They're usually on to accompany whatever else we may be doing whereas "main" systems are judged by sitting quietly and enjoying music whilst excluding external stimuli as far as possible. Pretty much in a nutshell Paul I feel a lot who spend big money on systems end up listening to the Hi-Fi and not so much the music (inevitable if you just spent a grand on a gizmo), whereas the opposite happens with a more frugal system, we aren't 'listening' to the system, just enjoying the music. When I stopped doing the former my enjoyment increased exponentially as the music enjoyment took over from worrying about minuscule differences in sound, which are often just that, differences rather than improvements. The result for me was more pleasure, less stress and more time and money to spend on music and shows. Forums don't help either, unless you can control the mania that's often created and stop thinking you might be missing out on something. This is my personal take, we are all different so YMMV. One of the most ironic threads here is the fuse one, started by our good friend David Brook - you couldn't make it up, just too funny.

I think you're slightly missing the point, Tim . I'm always listening to the music, in fact I don't really understand listening to the system at all. Yes, the fuse thread is at once amusing and annoying, but again it's because people either don't understand or don't want to understand that the only reason for their existence is to get more from the music. If they didn't do more for the music, not one of us would waste a second's breath talking about them and SR would die. Any other assumption is even sillier than the thread itself!
