You always get a better idea on the second week of testing because as you say, that is where they are closer to full race spec. Should be interesting to see, but I have a feeling that Mercedes are still going to be the team to beat.

Looking forward to it. We should get a better idea of how close Ferrari are to Mercedes, too.

Pssst... wanna buy a cheap engine? Very low mileage. Just came off the car. Got several. It's a genuine Honda.

Hehe. It's amazing what being a few years behind and having limited testing has done to McLaren Honda this time around. Time was when Senna would put it on pole win the race and then drop a bombshell to other drivers that he'd have 50 more horses next race, just to really shit them up. Can't seem to find that kind of magic in todays constrained hybrid land. Glad to see rear tyre widths worthy of the premier class again. My last Caterham had 9" wide rims and slicks in race mode. Looked cool bearing in mind they are only 13" in diameter. Standard is 6" wide. I must look up the 2017 F1 rim widths. They are 405/670-13 (why mix metric and imperial dooh)! So 405mm is 15.8"! They look wider. Last year etc they were a paltry 12.7" Same diameter as my Caterham but I had Avon 20 13 9 ACB0's. Those are inch measurements of course. Outer diameter / inner diameter / width.

The Ferrari with Vettel is fast today, with Hamilton just behind. This is looking promising.

I am seriously concerned about McLaren. The recovery track has done more laps than the MP4.

It could be something specific, if not easy to fix. I feel for Honda, they have such a heritage in motorsport and their last F1 engine was a real winner. They simply have not had the time to shake this one down properly although it's hard to excuse the sheer number of failures.

Breaking news: Former Formula 1 and motorcycling world champion John Surtees has died at the age of 83, his family has announced. He was in my opinion robbed of a knighthood. Surely the greatest all round motor racing champion the UK has ever had.

John Surtess also seemed like a really nice guy RIP J Yes, I met him at Brands Hatch many years ago, and he was a real gentleman. Very sad when he lost his son Henry in a racing accident a few years back.

Yes and apparently Mercedes are considering, which is interesting because my understanding is that their split wasn't exactly amicable and was actually driven by Mercedes wanting to ditch McLaren as opposed to McLaren finding Honda. Full story here: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/39290908

Very worrying. I'm disappointed in Honda, their previous history in F1 was superb. I've seen close up the Japanese tendency to work secretively and not give all the facts, I'll bet that is royally pissing off McLaren.

Hamilton continues to do the business, fastest in both P1 & P2. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/39376752I do feel for Alonso though, a talent that is wasting. Give the man a decent car McClaren Honda

The gap between Hamilton and Bottas is interesting, I wonder if it will close up at all? Remember, they would have had the engine turned down today. Tomorrow, they'll pull out all the stops and then we'll see some serious times.
I really want Honda to fix their engine, I know they have the necessary knowledge within them. It's very frustrating.

Never mind if Vettel or Hamilton will win the championship. What bout Stroll beating Maldonado for the most crashes and DNF in a season? I wonder if my local bookie would take a bet on that.
