Janine was on fire tonight. Quite masterful control of the upper registers in a performance which is so hauntingly inhabited by a deep longing; she took us on quite the journey of the soul. And to think this was written in 1916! Bach for the encore …. such judicious use of vibrato. Heaven. Very interesting to see the behind the scenes stuff of the streaming during the interval … Kudos to GSOplay for putting this all together. These guys do a really great job - all the cameras are remote operated and the vision is mixed live, directed by a guy following the score. Tonight's concert will be on the GSO video on demand in 30 days time. www.gso.se/en/gsoplay/Going to enjoy Tchaikovsky 6 now.

I had to sign off soon after that started, I wasn't too upset as what I heard wasn't all that compelling ...
I should add that the contemporary work that kicked off the piece was excellent, the intriguingly titled 'Steampunk Blizzard' by Daniel Nelson!

Sad to report the passing of Ivan March. I found the Penguin Guides completely invaluable for collecting vinyl; a fabulous resource for classical devotees. Ivan March, who reviewed for Gramophone for four decades, has died aged 91. Readers – both of Gramophone and indeed of the long-running Penguin Guides – will remember Ivan as a generous-spirited and expertly-informed critic whose advocacy of releases was born of a life-long passion for music and recording. www.gramophone.co.uk/classical-music-news/ivan-march-long-time-gramophone-critic-has-died

Sad. I, too, have loved the Penguin guides as an invaluable resource for classical music. His reviews were always descriptive and clear.

I have some of these. Very pleased to see the Emil Gilels Piano Concertos 4 & 5 in the list, as well as Perlman's Violin Concerto.
The Kleiber Symphonies 5 & 7 is a must-have but where is the Jochum 9th?

The Canadian investigation into allegations agains Charles Dutoit has closed with insufficient evidence found. This is rather strange - the Philadelphia Orchestra finds that claims against Charles Dutoit are 'credible.' However they declined to comment any further - is it helpful just to leave things like that?? www2.philly.com/philly/entertainment/arts/charles-dutoit-philadelphia-orchestra-sexual-harrassment-montreal-20181108.htmlThe Montreal Symphony said that although the procedure it employed "was rigorous and conformed to best practices in cases of internal inquiries into sexual harassment, the process did not yield sufficient information in relation to allegations of sexual harassment," according to a statement first published on the blog Slipped Disc. "In light of the independent expert's work, the two plaintiffs did not wish to follow up on their grievances and did not consider it opportune to provide formal declarations with respect to these allegations. As a result, the process of inquiry concluded in mid-October."
