Hmm, it does seem to be following the money. However, any action to spread the uptake of classical music has to be a good thing.

I wonder what Sir Henry Wood would have thought of it all. This was his mission statement for the Proms -
< I am going to run nightly concerts and train the public by easy stages. Popular at first, gradually raising the standard until I have created a public for classical and modern music. >
Thing is I suspect the appetite for classical music is there already - I'm sure they already have world class halls and no doubt plenty of top orchestras pass through already. I'm not suggesting they should have gone to Papua New Guinea but it would have been fabulous to have exported the Proms to somewhere more adventurous ...

My favourite music of his are some of the lesser known works like the 5th symphony.

I love the 5th but not sure it could be classed as lesser known - that and the 6th would be his most popular symphonies ... But of course there are lots of his works that are better know on a broader scale like the ballet scores so I see what you mean ...

I'd have thought the 4th is more well known.

I got an e-mail about it earlier. It'll be Rattle's first season with the LSO.
...meant to add, shame it's the Barbican as I really find the sound of the auditorium uninspiring.

It's not the best for sure, but I've been to some wonderful concerts there over the years and in terms of its modernist design and aesthetics, it's actually one of my favourite places ...

I don't mind the aesthetics, but it's much harder for me to get to than the Festival Hall and isn't as nice a venue overall. The latter has the advantage of that wonderful promenade by the Thames and lots of local restaurants to choose from.

I've done the Sydney Opera House, if that makes a good start? Saw Joanna MacGregor perform there.

Interesting story. Sad that the royalties have been siphoned off, probably to ignorant philistines who don't even like his music.
