Yes I think the difference with this documentary is that it's not full of soundbites of fawning fans telling us how Mozart was so much better than the rest ... It's a much more scholarly and less 'ITV' style approach if that makes sense ...

I've got a double dose of Wagner coming up in Munich at the end of the month.
First up is Das Rheingold with Jurowski pulling the strings at Bavarian State Opera. Then I have a concert performance of Tristan und Isolde Act 2 with Lise Davidson. Sir Simon provides the tunes with Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

But Jules, then you'll need to see Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung, or you won't know how it ends.
It's probably not too much of a spoiler if I tell you it's NOT a happy ending, unless, perhaps, you're a Rhinemaiden.

The trouble with Wagner is that we know the good bits already.
Sadly, the rest of it (hours and bloody hours of it) is not so good.
I still remember my sister's reaction to six hours of Die Meistersinger, which her at-the-time boyfriend thought would make a good night out for her.
Good luck, Jules!

I predict that Jules will absolutely love the spectacle of the whole thing, quite apart from the excellent music. Rheingold is the shortest opera in the cycle, if memory serves, at around two-and-a-half hours ...ish. I assume your sister attempted to correct Wagner's perceived grammatical error and insert a comma between the two words of the title, Martin?

I'm looking forward to being in Munich, taking in the atmosphere of the two very different venues I'll be visiting and hopefully luxuriating in the quality of the music from first class performers.

Mark my words.
Whether he wins Young Musician tonight or not, 17 year old violinist Shlomi Shahaf from Ukraine could become one of the all time greats, he has that much potential. His performance of the Tchaikovsky VC was just extraordinary, bravura in extremis.

"In the workshop with the Royal Academy of Music’s luthiers – in pictures | The Guardian"
This is an absolutely fabulous new article and I've now learnt that it's not just electric guitars that are being professionally "antiqued" ...

Fascinating. I wonder how one gets to become a luthier?

You beat me to it, Jules. I saved that to my reading list earlier. Brilliant, isn't it?

Thanks!
No, I didn't want to become one.

I think Cremona is the spiritual home of luthiers where many of the best have trained.

MTT - Mahler 2 @ Barbican tonight.
The best symphonic performance I have ever seen?

When they produce a robot that can play Bazzini's "La Ronde des Lutins," on cello (with another playing the piano accompaniment) I'll take AI musicians a bit more seriously.

I predict that Jules will absolutely love the spectacle of the whole thing, quite apart from the excellent music. Rheingold was quite stunning Paul with an exceptional modern production. Everything was totally on point and I won't forget the visit, quite an experience. I'll write a short review for this and also my visit to Sir Simon and the BRSO ...
