Yes folks you too can vote for Gramophone’s Orchestra of the Year 2021. The 10 orchestras nominated this year are: Academy of Ancient Music, Accademia Bizantia, Bamberger Symphoniker, Berliner Philharmoniker, The Cleveland Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Philharmonia Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich. I love both the AOAM and the Philharmonia but know very little about the others, apart from the Berlin Phil who have been trading on former glories for quite some time. Oh, did I mention that again? Silly me. You can listen to select highlights from each orchestra and vote via the link below. An impossible job to choose IMO unless you've listened to multiple live performances by each orchestra. www.gramophone.co.uk/awards/gramophone-classical-music-awards-2021

What a totally pointless thing to try and do!
As for trading on past glories, quite a few of the nominated orchestra immediately link to particular conductors for me...
Academy of Ancient Music - Hogwood Accademia Bizantia Bamberger Symphoniker Berliner Philharmoniker - Karajan Cleveland Orchestra - Szell Minnesota Orchestra - Vanska Orchestre symphonique de Montréal - Dutoit Philharmonia Orchestra - Klemperer Singapore Symphony Orchestra Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich - Ansermet.
Mostly dead and gone!
The Berlin Phil never really got over the end of the Karajan era imo, exacerbated by the appalling decision to choose and then, gobsmackingly, continue with the hopelessly uninspired Rattler.

I do think a trip to Bamberg would be in order. A picture book town with a very fine orchestra! Should have gone when we went to Nuremburg but were already visiting two towns. Maybe next year ...

The Montreal under Dutoit were very polished. I'm not sure if that has carried through to today.

Christoph von Dohnanyi was excellent at Cleveland. No idea who is there now!

Apparently you don't need to provide proof of vaccination or a negative test to attend concerts at the Barbican or Southbank.
It's mandatory for concerts in America like the LA Phil and Chicago; whilst there are also some strict protocols across Europe in the likes of Germany, Italy and Austria.
Why am I not surprised in the slightest we are lagging behind ...

I wouldn't mind, but I saw him play The Four Seasons and it was not a particularly memorable concert. I don't like his recording either.
