There's nothing wrong with demanding that phones - not just Apple - all have replaceable batteries. There are two big reasons for scrapping phones and tablets: smashed screens and lost battery capacity. People will discard perfectly decent phones because a two-year-old heavily used battery is failing. It's wasteful.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-us-canada-65967464I find this very sad. There seems to be precious little hope now of a successful rescue. What there will need to be is a full inquiry. How was this sub ever allowed to undergo commercial operations without safety certification? What do the risk assessment and disaster recovery documents look like? Which agency oversaw OceanGate's operations? Why did the sightseers undergo such a risky trip? Were they fully aware of the dangers of circa 4km depth and the lack of much if any rescue options? It looks like a 19 year old, with most of his life in front of him, will be cut short in unimaginable circumstances.

“ This experimental submersible vessel has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body, and could result in physical injury, disability, emotional trauma, or death.” That's just one line from the " extensive" waiver outlining a number of potential ways they could die during the journey that all of the passengers on the sub are asked to sign before being sealed inside her. Apparently the waiver mentions " death" three times on the first page. www.mirror.co.uk/news/us-news/missing-titanic-submarine-wasnt-signed-30278445

I'd heard that, but you've got to ask yourself the questions:
- Why was this commercial operation allowed by the oversight body? - Why did anyone sign up to it? - What were the father and mother thinking?

Throughout my life I've made it a point to carefully avoid places where the barometric pressure exceeds 6000 pounds per square inch. Pictures will suffice, thank you.

(and the pictures are higher resolution than what could be seen through a tiny porthole in pitch darkness with a couple of lamps shining)

At 6000 psi the implosion would have occured much faster than a pin piercing a balloon.

Cannot believe they went and did it
My first thought was that visiting the wreck as sightseers was inappropriate, ghoulish, disrespectful. Didn't watch Titanic and probably never will
Don't like water anyway. Going that far down in what seems to be a prototype or a Heath Robinson sub is insane. No second chances if anything goes wrong Das Boot gave me enough reality of life under the water

Simply outstanding war film, one of the best ever made. Jeanette's Dad was in the Navy during the war (he was actually on a ship that was torpedoed) and he said the same thing. Obviously he had very little affection for German submariners, but he thought it was brilliant. I believe it was the was the Jürgen Prochnow TV series that he saw, and he watched it with a growing and grudging respect.

Yes, I saw the mini series and also the edited feature film. Prochnow is incredible playing that part.

- Why did anyone sign up to it? - What were the father and mother thinking? Those are the two most pertinent questions.
As a past scuba diver with a fair bit of experience I have my own views on this, which are not too dissimilar to James Cameron's. I find it very hard to have any sympathy for any of those who lost their lives apart from the 19 year old - the rest should have known better. It's very tragic but it should never have happened - it's the families I feel the real sorrow for, as they're the real victims.

Shows human stupidity and misguided resource deployment / lack empathy for others in real need. I'm referring to all who are living under oppression, hunger and persecution, so great that they take the desperate action to flee their unstable countries. Board unsafe boats and perish in the attempt. Where was the rescue mission and resources for them? The world idlely stood by and watched.
A bunch of privalidged adventurers, more money than sense, on nothing more than a rubber neck mission! - that gets a huge sympathy vote, not to mention endless resources thrown at it - really?!
