Air-source pumps are the current hope. However, (like ground-source) they require a highly insulated building to act as the sole source of heat and in most cases will provide background heat only. If you have an old building (ie early Victorian or older) you can pretty much forget them it seems, especially if it is listed.
I looked at them for my place in the UK (early 17th century, and listed) and there is no way they would provide any meaningful provision. Electric only might be possible, although there were storage heaters in the place when I moved in and they were useless. Installing new generation electric heating panels would be a nightmare as getting cables where they would be needed would be challenging to say the least. And then there is the power supply. All overhead in the village and there is no way it could carry the load if more than a few houses went down that route.
Hydrogen (if sourced from electrolysis) seems the most viable for the older building stock, but that would probably require significant investment to ensure that the supply network could deliver it, and unless the gas supply companies returned to public ownership I have my doubts as to whether the investment would be forthcoming.

So little talk of
Draught proofing - cheap !
Insulation - pretty cheap
Passivhaus and the like
Then heat pumps etc can do a better job

Heat Pumps. Appear not to be the answer, as Boris imagines: www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-10121865/JOHN-HUMPHRYS-heat-pump-left-cold-Im-hot-bothered-PM.htmlThe whole question of energy should have been considered long before now; but politicians were happy enough to rely on the market and allow utilities to be sold off, which other countries haven't allowed. There was a time you used to get a discount from British Gas for prompt payment of your quarterly bill; it was pretty decent, but got reduced and reduced over the years, till it was done away with. Can't have the Directors going without.

A couple of days ago Hertz was said to have ordered 100,000 Teslas.

Good luck to them training renters in how to use and charge an electric car.
I still remember a friend who worked for Hertz checking in a returned car. The American complained that it was slow and very noisy. Turned out she had driven everywhere in 1st gear.

New Year price rises for hi-fi to be expected. Rega's said to be 10-15%. Container transport costs alone have risen from something like £600 to £2000.

I keep hanging on hoping that we might revert back to the old pound notes and 10 bob notes!

No paper money has spent long enough in my pocket to worry. It's all them fuses you keep buying, Martin. You really need to curb that expenditure.
