Lewis was voted best driver of the year by the team bosses, and by quite some margin from Verstappen, who was rated 2nd. That should focus the mind of Toto and Mercedes before they try to upset Lewis even more with any sort of punishment. Ferrari has an eye on him, as does Mclaren. Lewis is a man who won't hesitate to jump ship if he feels tied down by the bosses. He already showed that when he gave his reasons why he left McLaren. Agree, I think Mercedes are going to have to be incredibly careful. Interestingly I read something the other day about Mercedes sending out a thank you note to their fans which said something along the lines of, We've now achieved what we set out by emulating McLaren in the 80s by having both our drivers as WDC. Now if that doesn't start the conspiracy theorists up again, I don't know what will!!

Nico has retired apparently !!! Blimey !!! Why is likely because he's achieved the one thing he really wanted and just wants to chill with family and enjoy an easier less stressful life - fair enough I guess. It is clear he found F1 and the title chase very tough, he often said F1 is never easy. Who'll partner Hamilton - wow !!

He probably figured out that he won't be so lucky twice. I wonder if Toto will be phoning Verstappen senior any time soon... Visions of Toto shredding Lewis's disciplinary letter as we speak.

If they can't get a young superstar then bring in Jenson for a year.

I just saw it - that was not predictable! However, it makes a lot of sense to step down while at the top and he has a family to consider. I actually quite respect that decision.

I actually quite respect that decision. Me too, in fact I respect him immensely for that and more than I ever have done before. interesting to know who'll partner Lewis next year? Maybe Pascal? Or could the coax Jenson away from McLaren... One things for sure, they've got an interesting conundrum now around how to punish Lewis about the final race. Whom ever they choose, I'm sure it'll take them a few races to get up to speed, which could give an unexpected advantage to Lewis

This is quite a shock and will trigger all manner of debate and even conspiracy. Hamilton is the undisputed star of F1, Verstappen the undisputed rising star. Mercedes Benz being who they are will want the big rising star to line up against their global star and nothing else will do for them. They don’t do ones they only do one two’s. The relationship between Totto and Verstappens Dad is ideal…. They will move heaven and earth to make this happen, mark my words !

Yes WOW!!! Nico retires. "achieved what he wanted to, 25 years of striving. Past year stressful on family".
The rest can get on with racing now. I won't miss him.

As much as I love Hamilton, I kind of warmed to Nico this season. He's only human afterall and I do have the utmost respect for his decision. He could have let his ego get in the way to look strong and continued but I sense he cant be asked with all the stress and hard work anymore. He knows the coming season would be no easier for a number of reasons and Hamilton will be all over it ! Some people thrive on it, some dont - Respect to him for not pretending otherwise.

Once upon a time, 1997 there was a MotoGP 250cc race in Argentina
Loris Capirossi was leading the championship on points, just. Harada was ahead of him in that race and if he stayed there would beat Loris *and* take the championship
By sheer coincidence Loris ran into Harada from behind, took him off the track and coincidentally took the championship.... <cough>
Although world champ Aprilia 'released him from his contract"

I guess the big question is whether to bring in a no2 driver or a fierce competitor. A good short term decisions or Mercedes would be the former. Better in the long term and also for fans would be the latter.
The last thing I want to see is a repeat of the Schumacher years where we had one dominant car with a driver whose team mate wasn't allowed to race him. Although I felt Vettel would be up for replacing Hamilton, I don't know if he'd partner him. He didn't like being beaten by Ricciardo, so I'm unsure he'd take that challenge. That said, I'm sure he'd get huge favouritism from Mercedes as a German driver with a big national following. I'd personally like to see it too.
Alonso would race against Hamilton and Hamilton would partner him. Both have matured since their McLaren days. The thing is, I reckon Alonso might stay with McLaren having backed that horse already and the new rules/scrapping of token system for next year.
That leaves Verstappen. Could he get out of his Red Bull contract?,Anything is possible in F1 as long as the money is there. It's the most interesting opponent for Haimilton and guaranteed fun for the watching public. Will it happen? Doubtful, but it won't stop me hoping.

Aye, I agree he's a star, it's the 'undisputed' bit I disagree with . . . he did just lose his title
