I can't remember, I have a life away from forums you know! I think it was to mention the interconnects and speaker cables, which are also available to borrow - this thread IS about loaning NVA gear to interested parties and not just about BMU's or the TIS, which Paul said he couldn't look at for quite understandable reasons. We're talking LOAN equipment here, from the whole range, not just BMU's or accusations of me selling outright ffs I was trying to help and remember the 'stuff' Exposure used to supply with their Farlowe era gear.

Dave, please don't push it. You were blatantly selling. In the forum you most often frequent they throw accusations of 'shilling' for much less, so try not to be hypocritical about it and just keep to our rules please.

I apologise, but I feel I must politely defend myself here.
I thought this thread was an NVA Loan thread. Had I been spraying NVA all over the rest of the forum, then I really would be shilling, as I was once accused of doing with Rega as you remember over on AOS - I wasn't as it happened and have discussed this at length with the accuser, who admitted to me that he was trying to shake me up a little and possibly invite some form of communication at the time.
I think we do need to establish some ground rules here please. NVA make a range of equipment, but if one item is unsuitable for loan for whatever reason, then am I not allowed to recommend another item to try on loan - on THIS thread only?
I do hope that this thread isn't allowed to die once the TIS and MBU loanees have finished with them. Other trade members could quite easily organise loan schemes too, as you've suggested, although I suspect one or two have complained instead?
I really thought I'd been careful and hopefully, a useful member of this forum in all manner of topics and have tried to keep my freelance association of NVA just to this thread. I have nothing to do with the cables or speakers at all, or even the bigger amps at present and was asked to take over the overseeing of the loam scheme as Kaz has more pressing commitments.
By the way, I haven't PM'd Paul as he requested with what you may regard as a sales pitch for other NVA stuff. I'd rather keep it all above board and out in the open.

On the first page of this thread there is a list of what is available If you wish to add to the list on the first page of this thread just simply pm one of the mods and we be happy to help The rules are quite simple no direct selling or shilling. We really want to facilitate this but it is important that we maintain our values and rules. This is a great opportunity for people to hear stuff write reviews, gain experience of products. Within this there is a natural promotion/awareness of the product

I confirm I haven't received a PM from Dave in case anyone is wondering.

We don't want you to feel got at, Dave, we're just trying to set the right tone for other vendors who are interested in us supporting their loan scheme. Please carry on with your great contributions elsewhere on TAS, it always makes good reading.

Please may I do an update as to where the two main suspects are?
Accudazed Steve, I take it the BMU is now with Greg. Greg, do you have it and what do you think? The TIS should now be with 'WalterWhite' on HFS. is this the case.
Please don't forget to jot some comments down on your experiences and to everyone else - please also look at the full list of available 'stuff' to see if anything there can tempt you to try it (hope I can go this far?).

Thanks, Dave. Some more comments on findings (not only in the BMU and TIS threads, but create more for other products as necessary) would be great!

I don't think Steve has had the cable for the seven days yet Dave, but I'm pretty sure that the BMU was sent early in the week. Steve will be along soon to confirm.

Yes, received the BMU today, thank you, Steve. Once I've had a good listen, I'll write something up in the BMU thread.

Dave, I see the A40 mono power amps are on the loan list. Unless I have missed them, they do not currently feature in the eBay shop. Please can you tell me what the retail price is?
Thanks.

Thanks Dave, my eBay searching was obviously negligible.
It does leave me with some questions which I hope you can answer.
Studying the NVA website, the only discernable difference between the A40, A70 and A80 mono power amps is their difference in increasing power output and the required corresponding PSU adjustment. There is no suggestion that working through the grades involves any improvements to the signal circuits, hence, where you pay more, all you get is more power and no improvement to the signal output. Is that really the case? I appreciate that a better PSU can bring improvements to sound on it's own but the suggestion here seems to be the upgraded PSU is simply there to facilitate the increased power output. In my world, if I invest in an upgrade, regardless of whether or not the power output is increased, I would expect something better from the signal circuit per se.
Some clarification on this would be really helpful, especially as I am considering other NVA products at present.
Thank you.

I'm sure Dave will answer more fully, but you're right in that the upgrades are to the power supplies as you go up the range. That means bigger transformers but also something else too. NVA amps have a circuit that can be split so as to use separate transformers for each gain stage.
Having had a few NVA amps in my time I'd advise keeping an open mind to the approach. Sure, you get the same circuit in a lowly AP10 and it sounds ridiculously good, especially with efficient speakers. But more and bigger amps can bring real benefits in authority, poise and sheer oomph. I went from an A30 stereo amp, added a pair of A40 monos and then on to 4 X A40s. The improvements were very worthwhile and the good thing was that there was no downside. You just got more of the goodness. Often a change of amp does mean a change of circuit and you get positives and negatives. Sure the positives can outweigh the negatives, but that was the first time I found upgrades without a downside.
I did try a pair of A80s which should have been even better. For me, the 4xA40s beat the 2xA80 but that may have been down to the crossover effects of my Spicas. These are only my experiences, but I can honestly say the 4xA40 produced one of the best sounds I've ever heard in a normal sized room. I've had AP10 and AP20 which will give you a great taste of the sound but I thought the extra cash for the multi amps was very good value in sound per £.

I would agree with this, I went from a pair of A80s to a big prototype TSS and I found the same improvements as singularity

I think you lot have answered it for me. The one NVA I haven't tried here is the A80. Splitting the supplies inside from input transistors to driver and outputs helps increase power over the single transformer models - I have to be VERY careful here to prevent a wrist smack for providing incorrect information. The A70 takes the single transformer concept about as far as possible, the way RD designs them, as going higher with rail voltage will then overdo the input circuit. Bearing in mind the driver and output stage devices are double the voltage rating of the input side, it makes sense I think if more power is wanted and hopefully further improves sound as well for other reasons - Gawd, I hope I've said it right...
As said above, the baby models 'do' musicality by the bucket-load with no grain and in my experience here, clip very gently and mainly in the bass on rock music played loudly (it sounds a bit like a fluffed up stylus), so like a valve amnp, they actually sound louder than the mere power output would suggest - an old BBC research paper found that we can tolerate 10db of soft clipping before it becomes really audible apparently. On the small Cubette speakers, a thrashed small NVA power amp just sounds brighter when pushed hard, as if you've turned the bass down a bit when the volume went up.
My own A70 spec amp has a rather higher limit and so far, It's got far too loud for comfort before the amp obviously complains - at similar perceived volume levels, the Krell 50S has both bias lights on and is cooking its internal components nicely...
Hope this helps. I'm told the A40's make a genuine step up in power and overall finesse over the 10's and 20's although I've not directly compared them.
