Its only in the last six years I've actually regarded Hi-Fi as a sort of hobby and thats purely because of the forums , up till then I've had little in variety of kit. Early 70's and my very first purchase , JVC JR S 100 Receiver : I had to wait a bit before I could buy some speakers , so I'd just turn it on and marvel at the blue lights A pair of Leak 3020 speakers came about a month later : So I listened to Radio , all records where down stairs played on my parents Garrard radiogram. My 21st birthday and a Turntable , a Leak 3001 and an AT cartridge : About a year later and an Aiwa Cassette Deck , AD6300 : And that was it for about 13 years when a cheap Technics CD player was added, bought on the high street from a samll shop that sold white goods , can't remember the model. Coming up : Big change was made in 1991 with a house move, next.

A friend of mine had one of those big JVC receivers. They were impressive. Love the Leak deck with what looks like an Acos (or Rega) arm? Bet that sounded alright, that system.

I had the JVC for 40 years , not in use of course just for sentimental reasons , I tried to fire it up and it kept blowing fuses , beyond economic repair so it went to the tip. So did the T/T which I regret as it only had a broken belt but CD was in and my vinyl had been in the loft for ten years. The Leak 3020 speaker mountings perished - tip. The Aiwa went for a tenner in the early days of e-bay , another mistake it was mint The Technics CDP - tip.

The cost of hifi kit is 2nd to the enjoyment it gives the listener.
The former can differ by many £1000's but the latter could be the same!

Nice! What did the receiver and speakers cost - can you remember? Yes the receiver was £125 and the speakers £95, The turntable was also £125 because that was my allowance for my 21 st. The Aiwa deck was £169 and I think the Technics CDP was possilbly around £175 it was bottom of the range but new "magic" technology.

So in 1990 we moved house (oh by this time I was married ) and I convinced my wife we needed a new Hi-Fi , budget £1000 , research What Hi-Fi Mag . A year later and , Arcam Alpha 5 CD - £450 , that now seems expensive and it was bottom of the range. Arcam Alpha 5 Amp - £350 And breaking the budget by £100 , a pair of Mission 751's - £300 Work and kids took up my time the system was hardly used , and that was it for another 15 years ! In 2008 a couple of game changes , house move with my own room ! and I discovered Hi-Fi forums , next.

The Arcams were staple stuff in those times, was never too keen on Mission speakers, though.

Just had a re-think and it was 1976 that I got my first amp the JVC in the OP. 2008 and a house move , 32 years and I'd had 2 amps , 2 sets of speakers , 2 CDP's and a T/T. A room at my disposal approx 4x3m , no speakers I sold the Missions before we moved so just the Arcam CD and Amp , a friend of mine mentioned Hi-Fi forums to get some advice on speakers to go close to the wall. This resulted in : Rega RS1's and some Atacama stands. By 2010 the forum surfing had took effect , Arcam's gone , Rega Mira 3 amp , Rega p2 T/T and as I'd got back into vinyl I bought a 300Disc CDP basically to store my CD's although I did add an old CA DAC Magic II. And very happy I was too , and then I went to Scalford

With just your system and enjoyment of music all is fine.
Then hearing an album you know on another system can be, er challenging.

2011 and I went along to the Hi-Fi show at Scalford Hall , I didn't really enjoy it , tired from the journey , didn't know anybody and I couldn't relate to any of the euipment on show , it all sounded good and I realised when I got home it all sounded amazing ! A plus point was I won an old sad looking Thorens TD160 in the raffle. There is tons of info on this deck on the net , I stripped it down did all the recommended maintenance and easy mods and fitted a Denon dl110 cartridge. I was very pleased with the results , I loved the sound it produced and the engineering that went into it. I bought lots of vinyl and enjoyed my set up for the next 10 months. (The Rega p2 was sold )

The TD160 is a great deck and capable of nice results. Do you still have it?

Love the TD150 and 60. I bought my daughter one as part of her 18th birthday present. She loves it too!

2012 and alls good , TD160/DENON dl110 into the phono stage of the Rega Mira3 out to the Rega RS1's using Nordost Flatline Gold II , 10 months and no need to change anything. Scalford Hall again the year of the Steve the Sawman , I stayed Sat night , much better, got to know people , saw loads of kit , hadn't got a clue what anyone was talking about , crossovers , SUT's And in the raffle I won a brand new Puresound p10 phono stage ! The P10 didn't do a lot for the sound over the Rega stage still a very easy , mellow , laid back listen. Near the end of the year I asked Guy from Puresound about my cartridge/p10 combo , he said it would be better with a MM maybe an Ortofon. Xmas and I bought an end of line Rega P3/24 and splashed out on an Ortofon 2M Black , excellent result , the sound opened up , lovely detail but not bright. The T/T became a spoiled child it got , a Groovetracer Ref. subplatter, dual pulley, silicone belts , Rega P9 feet , Isokinetik c/weight , Isokinetik platter , Michel clamp and finallt an Audio Origami rewire ! The P3/24 was my pride and joy , the vinyl playback well and truly sorted , finito....
