2 new toys recently, an oracle delphi mk1 and a pair of hifiman deva planar headphones. I justify these as a little (sic) present to myself for getting a new job....

Thankyou, its a relief tbh, after a lot of years being self employed and wondering where the next block of work is coming from

Thankyou, its a relief tbh, after a lot of years being self employed and wondering where the next block of work is coming from I only had one year of being self-employed and disliked it intensely.

I had a year contracting, but preferred to pay the agencies a fee to sort my tax etc. I had some great gigs, but was looking for a permanent job on and off for most of that time.

Very nice, Paul. My 27" AOC is still going strong. Will yours do full 4K?

Very nice, Paul. My 27" AOC is still going strong. Will yours do full 4K? It's quoted as being "Full HD" which equates to 1080p (1920 x 1080). Equivalent spec 4K monitors to the one I've ordered start at around 3 or 4 times the price I've paid. Unless I was prepared to accept a 60 Hz refresh and a 3-or-4ms response time 4K was a non-starter for me. I'd rather the higher refresh and response time etc. As an example, a Philips Momentum 27" 4K UHD Gaming Monitor - IPS, 144Hz, 1ms, Speakers, HDMI, DP was £699, in the same sale as mine was in. The cheapest I found was an LG (4K UHD 144Hz 1ms) at £429.99, mine was a £124.99 " Black Friday" deal.

Ah, ok. Mine will do 2560 x 1440, which is called QHD or 2K, between HD and 4K. It really helps when I'm doing stuff like parent portal editing right now, with lots of embedded documents and some HTML in different windows.

It really helps when I'm doing stuff like parent portal editing right now, with lots of embedded documents and some HTML in different windows. It was horribly tempting to up the spec, but I'm learning a bit of self-control in my old age. You know how it goes, "...this one is only £30 more, but if I'm spending another £30 then maybe that one at £50 more would be even better, but if I'm going that far, then..." and suddenly you're buying something for twice the price of your original choice.

New monitor arrived half an hour ago and it's plumbed in and working. Even using my existing graphics card (GeForce GTX 1060) I'm clocking 1920 x 1080 as before, but at 144 Hz - up from 60hz which was the max my old monitor would handle.
Unfortunately I need to cook dinner, so buggering about with the setup will have to wait. I've just run a game I'm currently playing, and it looks appreciably sharper/crisper even though I haven't set the colours up to my liking yet. My immediate response is that it was well worth the upgrade.

I've just ordered a slightly early Birthday present. I bought the 12" Slicing Knife just before Christmas and it turned out to be such a nice tool that I thought I'd have the rest of the blades in the series - before I ended up trying to use it for everything. They're not what a professional would call "high-end," but they're not cheap tat either, and their quality is such that they'll probably outlast me with the normal everyday wear-and-tear they'll be getting. They're made in Brazil, of all places.

I too bought a new knife recently, but a bit smaller than any of those. I have been toying with the idea of an ultrasonic knife for a while and a Kickstarter campaign in May last year resulted in the CtrlAX unit. I missed that and would have supported it had I seen it. They are quite tricky to source now, but just before Xmas I found an unused one for sale on eBay in Germany for quite a bit less than ordering from S Korea and so snapped it up (I suspect someone supported the Kickstarter campaign and either decided they didn't need it or managed to make a quick profit). Anyway, it arrived and does what I hoped. I won't use it for general cutting, but it is perfect for adjusting cuts on partially assembled small items as no force is required. www.wondercutter.com/product/ctrlax-2/
