Pretty decent sound from a vintage TV recording. And equally impressive mono-to-stereo creation:

I was going to add a couple more to this thread but i do not want to cause the partisan posting that this seems to have started . It is only music and I do get that you may not like it but that is fine no need for the insults or the digging at the music . What can I do next ? The trouble with humour, Topcoat, it's not always appreciated for what it is - or intended to be. Have to say, in the 80s, I was never a Ben Elton fan. Give me Les Dawson any day of the week. And forums can throw up personas of... prickly persuasion. Elsewhere, some years ago, an individual well known and made a living from his endeavours, was posting about a project he had started. I asked him a quite inicent question as to whether or not he had thought of trying so-and-so in his build as it was something I was curious about and would try if I ever was in that situation. He took it as some personal insult and got pretty aggressive. Even when I said it was just a simple enquiry, it made no difference. He still took it as some sort of go at him. Continue as intended. I would.

No time for any of that Nerdiophile nonsense these days... And never bought the album due to Linn's involvement. Always regarded them (Linn) with a certain level of contempt. Got the cd decades later - for the tunes, and Paul Buchanan's voice.
Not at all obsessed - by anyone these days. Always a special place for A Girl Called Eddy, however:
Buy the album just to give it away to people.
No audiophile pretentions, I'm afraid...

I must have missed the memo. I've heard people absolutely rave over ' Walk Across the Rooftops' but it does absolutely nothing for me. Me too, I'm afraid. May you burn in the Firey Pits of Hell...(!)

I've only seen about 3 of his videos - and not all the way through. I just can't take him seriously. He does have me amused though with how some people view hi-fi.

Not totally new. Jule's next (4 man lift) amplifier?
Takes his HiFi very seriously, does Jay.

I've enquired with Stan The Man. Don't know if he still bothers responding to his site. All the other 5 sub-assemblies are potted. And they seem quite complex. Couldn't find anything when I searched. Pity.

Thanks Paul. I'll have a ferret about. Didn't notice a missing sub-panel staring me in the face. Bastard! The other channel's is there - but I think it's potted. Bastard!

I never used to be totally happy with my efforts. The spacing of something would be a tad out. Or something would be slightly off centre.

Thanks Paul. Decades ago, when I had the enthusiasm to make stuff, I used to use it, and panel transfers. Problem being, they weren't very durable. Sealing them with a coat of lacquer helped, but then you had that finish.

Thanks Jules. Made a start with the back panel. The main problem will be front and rear graphics for the preamp. Not sure how I'll get them done. Photos aren't the best.

Give over man Jules. They both want rebuilding. The power amp's still got bubble wrap on where I staggered with it when I got it out the box.
No Martin. Years ago I had an odd exchange of emails with Stan The Man. He was going to update his site with data for his classic designs, but still has yet to do so. His CD1 went for £1100 on eBay a few days ago, despite not working.

I'm not saying they don't make a difference - I've never tried any, and doubt I will, simply on cost grounds. I'm just intrigued by how they can have an impact on sound quality.

Recently I acquired "The Best Sounding Amplifier In The World". Oh yes... Well, why settle for second or third best? According to Practical HiFi 40+ years ago it was! And that's good enough for me! What is it? Nothing less than the Monster Mission 771/2 pre/power combination. The preamp has some pretty unusual features with switchable bandwidth, AC/DC coupling, switchable gain, individual balance control and speaker switching. There's also R&C loading on the phono inputs. Veritable rat's nest of wiring inside, and cobwebs. Has me wondering what it's crosstalk figures might be as there's no shielded cable, other than that for the phono input. www.stancurtis.com/Mission.htmThe power amp weighs a ton. More than any of the valve amplifiers I have. I had to assist the delivery driver with it. Luckily, the box restrained both items. They're both constructed from thick aluminium plate. Built as separate mono units, and deliver 160W into 8R and 250W into 4R. No possibility of using any fancy fuses internally, as it uses a contact breaker. When launched at the Harrogate Show, it used a 3 speaker wire arrangement to overcome speaker cable effects. Effectively extending feedback outside the amplifier. No one else seems to have ever considered this other than DNM. Tell a lie, not sure if it was Hitachi or not that brought out a 4 wire configuration in the 80s called Sigma Drive, I think. Anyway, when production got underway Mission decided to adopt the standard 2 wire connection, so as not to confuse the buyer. Back then they cost £1500 which equates to £8,200 now, apparently. and only 250 units were made. And how much did I pay for this marvel of engineering? Well, due to their remarkable condition and not working, it was for the princely sum of £300, reduced from £400! A bargain!

Simple question, HD: How does a something, as simple as a fuse, achieve, or effect all that?

A pair of Sennheiser HD 424 headphones, sort of. Got them in '78. Used them for years untill one driver failed. Put them away for sometime. Enquired the cost of a replacement and it was £14, but didn't bother. Years later, enquired again and it was now £40, so didn't bother again. Next time I tried, they weren't available anymore.Decades later, trying to find headphones to use with my Technics SL-P1200 directly, I tried a few. A German eBay seller was selling reconditioned 424s at a fair price, so I got a pair. Worked great with the cd player. Some time later, someone on eBay was selling a faulty pair with only one driver working.I got them and put the working driver in my pair. And now I have two pairs. So, strictly speaking, they haven't been in continuous use.
