I have just watched the 1st of this series and in general I enjoyed it much more than his previous shows / seasons. Perhaps I was just in the right mood this evening or things just clicked:) - even he guy with the Uke improved after the 1st few bars:)
Does anyone else watch the prog - what are your views?

Would that be the one I saw on Friday with Ryan Adams on it? I'm wary about BBC live performance music programmes nowadays as the sound quality of anything amplified is generally atrocious. I did enjoy Ryan's performances though.

Yes, it was that one. I don't really get too critical about AV SQ. It's never going to be a match against my 2 channel so I try to just enjoy the music and visuals / I genuinely find my brain either fills in the lack of audio SQ, or is occupied with the visual side so I care less or have less brain processing dedicated to the audio... works for me, but perhaps not for all:)

No not for me! The Beeb sound engineering philosophy seems to be that the vocals must be as near to crystal clear as possible, so when things get a bit noisy (as they are wont to do with rock music), everything else is compressed to hell. It just sounds awful to me. There must be a better way.

What I do like it for is seeing new bands / new material and then checking them out on Spotify / purchasing if I like.

Yep, it's definitely good for that!

That is how I use the program too I usually watch it on my laptop and not stream just to get a idea of the performance and then will listen more seriously if I like

I just watched the first episode and I agree about the sound quality, sadly lacking. Ryan also sounded a whole lot better live at Shepherd's Bush Empire last Friday night, brilliant showman as always - but I would say that wouldn't I

I've always watched the Jools Holland shows as it's a great way to pick up on new artists that you like. SQ has been variable, but at its best can be wonderful - generally better with the small scale acts.

I find there is a Jools Holland show 'effect'
Seems to take the life and soul out of the music - with notable exceptions, Seasick Steve's first ever being one. Kelly Joe Phelps was another.
Also find the same with Glastonbury
If any band sounds so so on either they could be worth investigating. Was not Was on a while back sounded awful, boring, soulless, MOR. Listen to their albums and anything but

It's a great show though, a few foibles here and there but the only 'true' music show on mainstream TV - I love it and try to never miss it. If it introduces a new artist to people then that's a bonus too. I know a few people who had never heard of The Decemberists prior to their Jools performance (some years ago now) and they came across quite poorly in the sound stakes, but the vibrancy of the performance showed what they are capable of and those people are now fans. They still remain one of my all time favourite live acts and Colin Meloy is a master songwriter as well as a superb showman. Live music is best consumed 'live' at the end of the day, not from a box. But if that's all you can get it's better than nowt Keep on rockin' Jools.

Listen to their albums and anything but Don't forget Katie Tunstall who was parachuted in due to late cancellation and performed with the looping pedal - not for the faint hearted live that, but on National TV etc!!! It can go so wrong. Brilliant performance that was, pretty much launcher her career I believe.

I usually come away disappointed It really should tick all the boxes for me but very rarely does it tick any
It's the soul that seems to be missing
This was the first time Seasick Steve had ever been seen and his career took off from there
The Fall did a superb "Blindness" I remember

It's the soul that seems to be missing Hmmm, totally don't agree with that at all, in fact the direct opposite - do you get to experience much live music Mike? For me music from a Hi-Fi often sounds like 'Hi-Fi' it's not real music, it's a polished copy of reality - live music is real music and that's where the soul is, not on a record. Couldn't agree more - I'm not a loops fan, but this was superb and when you know the circumstances beforehand it's even more impressive. Brilliant indeed.

I very rarely watch this show as there generally isn't much that interests me - had tuned in to hear First Aid Kit (who I missed) but instead had the misfortune to endure Mary J Blige performing 'Therapy' …
I might need some therapy after that … Awful, turgid nonsense and painful lyrics, spot the missing word -
<Why would I spend the rest of my days unhappy Why would I spend the rest of this year alone When I can go therapy When I can go therapy When I can go therapy two times a day>

First Aid Kit were very good. I've dropped their 2014 album into my Amazon basket.
