I actually do not have a preference myself I mainly listen to digital for the following reasons
At present I do not have a preamp and a decent phonostage
Most of the music I listen too is not available on vinyl
I find sound quality varies from the sublime to unlistenable with vinyl.
Ease of use with digital
I used to find digital quite hard to live with. I certainly experienced that harsh sound people often complain about, but I not really experienced that in my system for a few years now.
There is a lot of things I like about vinyl, the ritual to it, I can read the notes on the sleeve, and sometimes the sound is sublime.
But for me I love to hear and discover music. I find the most natural way to discover new music is streaming I wonder if I am more into the discovery of good music as opposed to getting the best sound I can get.

Digital is every bit as good as analogue when done properly. It's all in the recording technique. It certainly creates magic for me.

Digital is the one that will have most of the development and will take over as the very best there is

Echo most of the comments above. Streaming (via Qobuz) has opened up a whole new musical world i would never have discovered. Only trouble is, like the Internet, there is just so much of it. Can one drown in a sea of music ?

A lot of time and effort, especially by users playing around with the Pi and its associated bits and bobs, has gone into improving the sound that's now achievable via digital systems. It can take a little effort, and complete one-stop off-the-shelf solutions are still too expensive, certainly for the likes of me, but I think good digital sound, much like the truth, is out there. (Queue 32/384 digital recording of the X-File theme.)

If digital is that fantastic why are you lot spending so much on record players We're not the ones moaning about digital - you are. Have you thought about taking up macrame and put your frustrations into doing something constructive?

Don't come here and call members sheep, we're mostly very happy with our digital systems - playing music rather than moaning. Yes, I know what a Pi was created for and no, it's not just for teaching children but for teaching all age groups. Not that that has anything to do with the price of potatoes.

I've got a turntable. I've also got over 2000 vinyl albums and the same number of 12" and 7" singles, so I'd be pretty stupid not to have one. I've also got a CD player and shed-loads of CDs. I've been streaming files via JRiver on the PC for a few years, and now I've built a Pi streamer and I'm streaming the same files via that. I don't intend to sell the deck or the CD player anytime soon, in fact, I've just bought a new 'better' CD player. I really don't want to have to digitize/rip every CD or LP I own so there's a place for everything in my musical world-view. André - Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like you love the "idea" of vinyl and the sound it makes in your head but the reality is too noisy. It was the best sound, to you, on speakers, but you can't use it with headphones. The obvious alternative is digital but you hate the way it sounds because it's not as good as the vinyl ought to sound. There are two alternatives, digital or analog, you've found reasons to dislike them both. So, you tell me what the solution is, and how we're supposed to help? It sounds like you're saying you know that you'll have to accept some sort of digital solution eventually, but you will also keep moaning that digital through headphones doesn't sound as good as vinyl used to through speakers. [EDIT] Well, there's a change. I'm talking to myself again.

Wow i have to go on one to actually get a responce.
Er No slinger its not that
The music i want is on Vinyl. I cannot afford it because it is too expensive to buy, i refuse to pay between £200 - £1,000 each for them, i dont have that kind of money to do that. I wont buy re issues because they are not True Analogue & those that claim they are i do not believe them on the top of that Records do not have the quality of pressing or Sleeve construction they once had.
I therefore have a giant problem in only buying the said albums on CD would be an option being less than a tenner each, Problem then arises where i cant listen to digital,no matter how much i try, you do not actually own anything that a record gives you physically, another big issue. Its all like you are forced to move to Digital.
I absolutely see no way out without packing everything in. Im not interested in Flash Hi-Fi that is unimportant to me, a good quality 80's system would do me, its the Records that is the issue all the way.
