Cool! I might give it a try. I like the idea of running everything in RAM.

Remember that Volumio has an LMS plug-in available.

I added this underneath the DigiOne Another step up in performance Similar to adding the IFI USB Silencer or audio Ethernet cable

Nice, John. That's a new BR component I've not seen before.

Yes nicer looking than the previous pads. Another nice cheap upgrade Now thinking of adding some big feet to the Caiman

Be interesting to hear the difference between the 2 BRs. Could make a few people want one

I finally got my files to sound good What I needed to do was use the two USB IFI silencers joining together (using the same USB output hub). It taken away the harshness I was experiencing and allowed more detailed. Now can hear the USB files sounding a bit more richer and detailed than Spotify connect

Boggled and impressed This really is a journey isn't it Boldly going where no man/USB cable has gone before.

I've tried 3 configs with USB drives on my Pi3. Each is quite different. Poorest 1st, best last:
- USB3 WD drive powered via Pi - USB2 Toshiba drive with its own power supply - USB3 WD drive with Y cable allowing me to attach a power supply for the drive
The strange thing with the Y cable is that if I forget to plug in the drive power supply the Pi still provides juice for the drive. I wonder how the Y cable superimposes external 5V on the Pi 5V.
Each option above gives a noticeable step up in clarity and precision. This is all with the DigiOne.

Thanks Clive.
Sounds mad to me, but who cares if it delivers good sound

It seems important to not have the Pi powering the USB drive. The Pi is noisy so maybe this is a contributory factor but also the power tracks on the Pi PCB are not generous so may limit power delivery to a USB drive.

Do you have them on supports or some sort of isolation ?

Just some squashy material.

I am not fully understanding what you doing Clive with option 3 Agree the USB hub is very noisy anything that helps with this has to be a good thing

Hi John, the Y cable allows me to use an external 5V power supply for the USB drive. One usb type A plug goes to the Pi and the other type A plug goes to the external 5V power supply. The bottom of the Y cable is the usb3 connection to the drive itself.

Just some squashy material. That will do to start with for sure. Will get around to putting my Pi on different items and listen for any differences

I'm being a little OCD about the Y cable which permits an external power supply for the USB disk drive. As the Y cable seems to allow both the Pi and the external PS to supply the disk drive I wanted to ensure the Pi does not power the disk. I've used a solid USB connector male/female type A - I've removed the +5V connection though the ground still connects for handshakes. I now need to audition whether there's a difference with the Pi +5V totally prevented from powering the disk. I'll report back.

OK, initial test done with the USB disk drive Y cable totally +5V isolated from the Pi and then with it running in // with the Pi USB +5V. The result is conclusive yet inconclusive! For sure the sound is different, primarily in the bass. With total +5V isolation I get bigger / fuller bass. To put the bass back to the level it is with the // +5V situation I need to turn down my Behringer bass amp by one notch (John will know what I mean). Which do I prefer? I'm not too sure yet. I need to try more music; I'm guessing I'll prefer total isolation once I get the bass levels right. Here's the Y cable I'm using: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00ZJBIHVY?tag=vigukb-5-21&th=1Here something close the the adapter I'm using to break the +5V connection (I removed the +5V connection. www.amazon.co.uk/AKORD-Female-USB-Adapter-Coupler/dp/B0012XXX2QI'm using a male to female version but I couldn't quickly find an example. For those of us using USB powered drives on the Pi for our storage this is a low cost way to improve the sound (the Y cable). There are of course lots of different drive types so the results I expect with vary. What a sport this is!

Yes a lot more cost effective than using two IFI USB Silencers to help clean up the noise
