I think that the one thing I would do my level best to attend is the Bob Harris set. I am a huge fan of Bob, and his record collection too. You didn't mention "The Shires," Tim, they should be worth a listen, and I see Emily Barker hiding at the bottom of the Crossroad County list, I'd try to catch her too.

Yup, I will be popping along to see our Emily . . The Shires?, well, put it this way - the last time I saw them, after 2 songs me and my mate left the girls and went to the pub next door to chat to the support band. Went back to catch the last song and they didn't even know we had left, as they were at the front (small, but busy venue). We both said what a great night, I don't think they know to this day Really not my thing, or Ward Thomas, country pop which leaves me cold. I'm a roots country/americana guy. I will pop along to BBC Introducing, but despite also being a big Bob Harris fan, he's been drinking too much of the Nashville commercial kool-aid of late and I stopped listening to his Country show some months ago. Too much Bro Country.
There's actually only two acts I'm especially looking forward to, Elizabeth Cook and Lee Ann Womack, both their latest albums are superb. All the other artists I like I've seen already, these two I haven't.
I like Treetop Flyers too, shades of Poco and America, their new album is different, but also pretty good.

I know what you mean about our Bob, but he carried the "new music" torch alone for quite a while after John Peel died, and his Saturday night shows were always good value. I obviously haven't heard enough of The Shires to dislike them properly. I did quite like the couple of tracks I did hear, perhaps I'll not dig any deeper into their output though. Treetop Flyers - love 'em. They remind me, as you said, of Poco, and America, which is an extremely good thing. Their latest album seems to veer towards The Amazing Rhythm Aces in places, and even (to my ears anyway) Hall & Oates territory.

In fairness to The Shires, they are talented and they are very good at what they do, it's just not my thing. On album it's most certainly not my thing, but live they can when stripped back to just acoustic guitar and vocals, produce some very good music. That however isn't what they will be doing at Long Road on Sunday, so I'll be driving home early after Dori Freeman.
Bob's Sunday show was great, real shame he/they pulled it.

You didn't mention "The Shires," Tim, they should be worth a listen . . . The Long Road festival
Well I lasted for two songs and that was under protest as Carolyn wanted to see them. Even a comfortable seated & covered VIP area with a private bar couldn't persuade me to endure more than two songs. If I'd had my way I'd have been well along the M5 by the time they stepped on stage!!!
This however is probably the coolest stage I've ever seen at a music festival. The Front Porch, modelled on the curators grandfather's house in Bristol, TN. An absolute triumph, complete with a smoking chimney. Saw some good performances on here too and Bob Harris took charge of it Saturday for his BBC Introducing sessions (which I missed!). Banjo Jen in the picture (lookaway ChrisB).
I even got to ride the ferris wheel with Kashena Sampson
Some outstanding performances over the weekend, the top 3 being Lee Ann Womack (pure class), Joshua Hedley and The Lone Bellow. Plenty of other good mentions, but those 3 really stood out. Lee Ann Womack was off the scale, accompanied by just two acoustic guitar players she pulled off one of the best shows I've seen in quite some time . . . . anywhere. It was a bit special.
Rather a good effort for a first festival, some things that will require tweaking, but the attention to detail was impressive.
Next stop Nashville, a week today

I went to see The Aristocrats at Islington Assembly Hall. It pretty close to where I work. They did a two hour set to a sold out show. Usually these type of concerts attract musicians The band is very tight and have a good sense of humour. It a bit to frenetic at times (Gosh must be finally getting old) I enjoyed Plini more as he writes more interesting melodies. Guthrie guitar tone was awesome. He just switches styles so easily. If only I could afford a Victory amp. Marco drumming is very solid. The band often make off each other.

Woman to Woman - Judie Tzuke, Beverley Craven, Julia Fordham - Anvil BasingstokeThree consummate performers gave us their solo hits and their songs together tonight in the small but excellent Anvil venue. The appreciative audience were mostly my age or a touch older - understandable as I remember listening to Judie Tzuke when I was an early twentysomething. Craven and Fordham sang very well but I was surprised that the 62 year old Tzuke held her own, with power and control still in her voice. Craven has the best singing voice of all and engaged with the crowd in very funny moments. Considering her recent shock announcement that she has breast cancer for the second time, I consider myself fortunate to have heard her perform so well. Each can hold the audience but it was the way they supported each other with backing vocals that gave away their respect for each other's songs and performances. We had the inevitable three hits: Stay With Me Till Dawn, Promise Me and (Love Moves in) Mysterious Ways. However, it's Tzuke's songwriting that shows through with every song she performed sounding marvellous and untouched by age. Oh, and Fordham did a jazz number which showed previously unknown abilities in that genre.

You had me going there for just a moment. I was wondering to myself why I had never heard of someone with a name as memorable as Anvil Basingstoke. Well, it is early and I'm never too sharp at this time in the morning!

David Byrne last night.
Stunning presentation. 8 piece band, with a difference. Guitarists, keyboard, percussion was like a 'marching band.' No-one stood rooted to the spot.
Played all of his new album, plus some of the older Talking Heads songs. Sounded fabulous!

Does Tina Weymouth still perform with him? Not on this tour. An eclectic group, all ages.

Wifey and I went for our first overnight away together since Leo was born whilst he was looked after by my sister on Thursday and saw Def Leppard at the O2.
As my favourite band, I have seen them quite a few times, but this is the first time I’ve heard them play the whole of the studio album, Hysteria, and it was something else.
Unfortunately, the support act, Cheap Trick were a real disappointment, they just sounded and looked like a bunch of screaming geriatrics.
However Def Leppard were simply great and this is possibly the best I’ve heard them, which is saying something, as they are generally a great band live.

Been a long time since rock and roll Been a long time since I did the stroll...
So said Robert Plant.
Well, it's been a long time since I have been to a gig and come home with my ears ringing. We went to see a Zeppelin covers band tonight - Hats off to Led Zeppelin. Apparently, they've won awards and sponsership from Marshall amps and stuff. It was a great night out.
And L-O-U-D !!!

A good week for live music: Last weekend was the Lancaster Jazz Festival, so 3 small scale gigs - Yaatri, a young band from Leeds, Tom Ridout Quintet and Tebu Project, who were really, really good. Tagné Tebu is a keyboard player from Camaroon.
Then, on Thursday night it was the band who I started this thread with back in July 2014 - Pixies. They are just shockingly good live. They played an amazing 37 songs - no time for banter! Another reminder that home stereo systems just can't cut the mustard!

We're watching Desperado, a rather good Eagles tribute band, at The Lights, Andover. For a bunch of Midlanders, they emulate the band very well indeed. Most enjoyable, and I'm not even a huge Eagles fan.
